Well my flight back to Aus came upon me quickly after a good couple of weeks in the UK/Ireland/Switzerland. I flew into Heathrow from Zurich and walked the short distance to Terminal 3 from Terminal 1. I stocked up on toiletries and chocolate before checking my bag in. I had checked in online again (got SEQ 001 again too!) and dropped my bag in to a PE check-in desk – no queue, very quiet. I had a few hours to kill so headed thorough security and had a lovely meal at Chez Gerrard (beautiful fillet steak). I had a walk around and killed time in the shops before boarding was called. The flight was almost full for the whole trip back this time but I was happily in seat 19G after a very efficient priority boarding experience. We took of on time and I settled back watching a few TV shows until the meal was served. I had beef with rice – it was ok, but to be honest I wasn’t particularly hungry after my lovely meal at the terminal.

After a Baileys had been served and the meals cleared away, the lights were dimmed as it was a night flight. I settled back for a nap and again woke up 7 hours later! The PE seats are so much better for sleeping than Economy. After waking we were only 3 hours-ish from Hong Kong so I watched Robin Hood and then breakfast was served. It was pretty average – I had fried rice – but the rolls were warm and fresh. Drinks were offered multiple times and service was friendly and efficient throughout. We soon began our descent into HKG and landed early (about 25 mins). I went and took my pre-booked shower which was lovely and refreshing and wandered around and made use of the free Wi-Fi to check emails etc.

I bought 2 bottles of water to take onto the flight with me but after the flight was called and we headed down the gangway onto the plane there was a secondary security inspection and all liquids over 100ml were taken off us – even those bought in the terminal (after primary inspection). This has never happened to me before and didn’t happen on the way to the UK. Oh well, a waste of $30HKG and also meant we all kept asking for water the whole time on the flight. Boarding was again fast and efficient, offered 2 glasses of wine/juice before take off and made our slot perfectly on time. Food was served promptly – I had chicken with veges and it was fantastic – really delicious. I thought having had a good sleep on the previous leg that I would be awake for the majority of the 9 hour trek to Sydney – happily I slept a further 5 hours! It really makes the trip so much shorter if you’re unconscious for the majority of it! Food was served not long after I woke and I had a not too appetising sausage and tomato sauce roll (frankfurter cut up and smothered in tomato sauce). However, as I was nearly back in Australia I wasn’t too bothered and we were soon making our descent over a very picturesque Sydney. Everything flowed smoothly, I went through the super fast electronic immigration system (like IRIS) and my bag was one of the first to be dumped out onto the belt. I declared my choccies and gravy granules and was waved through customs. A quick train ride to Domestic and check in for my Brisbane flight and I was soon winging my way to the glorious state of Queensland.

It’s great to be home – only a bit of jetlag – way less than normal. I am happily spouting the virtues of Virgin Atlantic to everyone and will recommend them to anyone who asks. Premium Economy is wonderful – no doubt Upper is better, but for the very reasonable price I paid (about 160% of the Economy price in the end – bargain!) it couldn’t be better.

Thanks to all the contributors at V-Flyer for helping me make good decisions about seats etc. No doubt I’ll be asking questions about various things soon! Cheers.

Just some notes;

1. The V-Port is great – except the controller thing is attached to the unit at the opposite end to what would be logical, so when you use it the cable is stretched across and can be a bit awkward. ?|
2. The headphone jack would be better placed on the end of the armrest not on the inside where I kept hitting it with my leg as I fidgeted.
3. The tannoy announcements were very, very quiet – hard to hear and I missed a few – they needed to turn it up a bit.
4. More Baileys would be good!
:)

Very informative TR. I completely forgot about the extra security check in HK but remember now how it delayed boarding and all our liquids were confiscated. Good to hear the PE product works even on such a long journey.

I could not just imagine being on an aircraft for so long (even with the "pit stop" in HKG ): ) so my admiration goes out to you oo)

Your excellent TR clearly demonstrates this is a journey can be undertaken with planning and no doubt opting for PE does seem to have made it go just that more smoothly for you - just one question how did you go about booking the shower at HKG??

Thanks once again

I do this trip reasonably regularly and have always suffered from major jet lag. On the last trip after asking advice from my V-Flyer friends, I made sure I had a shower whilst in transit in HKG and it really did seem to help. It will definately be included in future schedules y)

Thanks for the TR, indeed, if you can sleep so well on the long journey it's better. I agree about the placing of the headphone jack too, these things really should be address better and hopefully will in the new interiors next year. Clever placement will reduce cost through fewer problems, and increase comfort ... gotta be the right way to go.

Jacki - my tip to overcome jet lag when flying to Oz is just to get drunk, all the way there, all the way back. Heck, it makes the flight whizz by!

Great report... Worthy of note for those heading out that way, and the additional security issue between HKG and SYD

DONT buy any liquid duty free on the LHR-HKG leg, nor at HKG

In terms of water, didn't you get the free bottles at your seat in PE?

I don't know how you manage to sleep on a plane, I need a flat comfy surface, a pillow or two and a duvet!
Also, maybe someone can explain the whole declaring goods to me? Maybe I'm just being blonde, but I totally don't get it ?|

ANYTHING that can be eaten must be declared on the customs form. Your bags are x-rayed on arrival and if you haven't declared something they find, then you will be fined.

Lizz

There are a couple of programmes* on Channel 1 (Virgin TV as was - channel 20 on freeview) based in Oz and NZ airports and they are always fining people for bringing in food items / or not even declaring them - they are really hot on food items and the bugs they can bring in in to the respective countries.

I think its an automatic fine of ~ $200 for not declaring even the items you can take in to Oz and NZ.

* 'Nothing to Declare' - Tuesday @ 8.00 PM is one

It's all about geography Lizz, because Australia is so geographically isolated from the other continents, it's evolutionary path diverged from the world some many millions of years ago. Hence why Kangaroos only live in Australia, and why Koala's in NZ for example. So too with bugs that infect plants and animals, they have their's, but they don't want ours.

Ahh ok I see! I also always skip past them programs on the sky guide, I see so much of airports in real life I hate having to see it on telly as well!

So for Australia and that okay, but why in the UK say? Is it for people doing say an Australia to UK trip and bringing something you can only get there here?

Love that programme! :D

Passport Patrol is the one that focuses on New Zealand customs and immigration.

Ta Tinks - couldn't find it in my Radio Times!

I love the idiots who act all innocent

Q - do you have any more money / food in your luggage
A - no, no !
(agent moves item in case to reveal money / food)

Q - What is this then?
A - Oh ! I though you meant something else.

I remember one programme where a woman had something like USD $20,000 confiscated because she didn't declare it. If she had declared it she would have been ok ! Mind she was being a total pratt about it so she got what she deserved !

I see what you mean about the bottled water being taken off of you when you re-board, this happened to us last year as we flew right through in economy so wanted bottled water as you don't get it on the plane and they took it off of us and many other who had also been caught off!
A money making exercise I guess!! v(

Hi all, thanks for your replies.

I did get the bottle of water in the seat back but I usually try to drink a litre an hour when flying as I find I get really dehydrated in the air. I felt bad having to keep asking for water thoughout the flight - it's easier if I can have a few bottles about my person!

Customs in Australia and New Zealand are pretty strict - as others have said - because they don't have many of the pests/diseases that exist elsewhere and may decimate the wheat industy or whatever. They ask everyone to declare all food items but allow most packaged foods (not dairy or plant based if it's fresh in any way) so I can bring through my chocolate, casserole mixes and gravy granules! It's no big deal - just declare if in doubt and they'll sort you out.

Does this still apply when having a stopover in HKG. I shall be flying from LHR-HKG, stopping for several days, then flying to SYD.

No, you will be ok as you will be able to pack anything you do buy on board from LHR - HKG in your luggage during your stay before flying HKG to SYD.

The advice is correct for any pax doing it as a single journey.

Thank you tontybear.

Would you also happen to know, after checking in and going through the primary security check point in Hong Kong, whether I would be able to purchase duty free drink and consumables before boarding my flight to SYD. (I might be tempted to buy a few things at the airport and would hate to have them confiscated :| ). i understand that I would have to declare them at SYD.
