I'm sure a lot of people don't, but I don't want to risk a trip to that special room off to the side, so I update mine every time. xx(

The ESTA FAQS say its useful to update but not compulsory.

They will still have that info from APIS and the other new thing you have to do as well

I'm would much rather spend a dull 5 mins easily updating my ESTA in the comfort of my own home, then not doing it, possibly resulting in any delay or extra time needing to be spent with a US immigration official.

I used to update it every time I flew, now I don't bother.

I haven't noticed any change in process passing through immigration.

If you haven't done it before you go, they guy at immigration fills it in there and then.
If you transit both ways through the US and don't have much internet access at your destination then there is no way that you can update the ESTA for the return. There was no mention that I should have done it and he was absoultely fine. (I was watching his fingers to see what he was typing!)

I never update ESTA and have not had any issues HOWEVER!!!..
On my last trip via MCO we went on to join a (Celebrity) Cruise ex FLL and the check in agent there asked us for copies of our ESTA printout. We explained that ESTA is an electronic registration and there is no need to hang on to the paper bits but were given the good old green I94W's to fill out. On the ship's return to FLL U.S. immigration did not even ask us to produce the forms. So there is still a lot of confusion out there even after over 2 years of implementation. If you are taking a cruise out of the USA I recommend you take supporting documentation confirming your ESTA with you. :?
