I might or I might not head over on weds LHR-JFK (or Newark) coming back the week after (midweek). Rack rate is 408... is it going to be any cheaper if I take a risk and do standby? I'm hand luggage only, so I don't give a damn really. Done the trip about 120 times and can't believe I've never thought about doing standby before... Thoughts... experiences? oo)

Cheers

I don't think they really offer a standby fair any more and purchasing at the airport can get very expensive, the reason being that they think you have to fly and so charge a high rate. I've booked one online the day of travel (3 hours before departure) and got a good price that way.

Let me know how it turns out I'm interested to know

What sometimes happens is that if there are few seats spare on the flight then they will open up bookings all the way down to the cheapest fare bucket just to fill that last seat or two. You will however have to have a confirmed flight on the return which may limit your options. Cheap tickets cannot be issued against waitlists.

As seanpep said, there isn't really a standby ticket any more (unless you are staff) as revenue control etc, etc, etc is supposed to reduce the need to fill at the last minute.
