Hi,

Can anyone suggest a good/reasonably-price for a stopover in LA? Just for one night and following in-bound flight. Are there any right by the airport or on-airport that are ok????

I stayed at the Renaissance LAX once after a flight - it's a great hotel. :)

there's a host of decent airport hotels (Renaissance, Sheraton 4 Points etc etc).If all you want is a crash pad and don't want a specific chain try looking at http://www.hotwire.com/(and use these http://www.betterbidding.com/ and http://www.betterbidding.com/ to assist you further re hotels that have been used on hotwire / price etc).
It's less hassle than Priceline (but the two websites are also good for comparison for PL too).

Another vote for Renaissance LAX great hotel, 5 minutes from Airport and a small pool if you like a dip after a flight.

The one time I stayed at the Renaissance (about 2005 I think) the lounge was full of british plane spotters. I did have some of the best quesadillas and salsa there though, and I remember the breakfast being good. The room wasn't much but it was OK for the overnight - might have been upgraded since I suppose. Hilton was OK too but not great. As an SPG plat I'd tried out their offerings too - and they we're in the just OK category . But I came to the conclusion that none of the on airport hotels are that great. I always felt as though I was still in transit, rather than already on holiday. The hotels are large and quite impersonal, and the area around West Century is a bit ropy. If "OK" is ok, the Priceline/Hotwire suggestions are good - although check out the locations of the winning bids first - some are a bit over rated. The Hilton LAX was coming up on BA a few days ago at £57 r.o. and around £60 tho.ugh VS

Since then I've got a cab out to Beverly Hills and stayed at the Hilton there on points, usually with a nice updgrade. Cab fare around $50 and sometimes picked a car up from Wilshire the next day rather than the airport. I've heard of others heading off to stay by the beach and have a meal there, e.g. Marina Del Rey, Venice Beach

I kind of expect hotels on or near the airport to feel like transit lounges - essentially, they are! But since we'll be getting an internal flight the next day (early), it makes more sense to stay as close as possible to the airport. Plus, some have complementary airport shuttle, which is a plus. I did wonder though, about eating - probably a really stupid question as this IS the US we're talking about, but do most of them have something like a starbucks in or nearby? Often can't face much to eat after a long flight, but we're always awake early the next day and hungry....

I'm just back from LA and spent a couple of nights in the Westin LAX which was fine - half-decent restaurant on the ground floor for breakfast etc., plus a Starbucks kiosk. Plus points for me were the regular, free shuttle bus, good-sized room, free early check-in (might depend on who checks you in though), free unlimited luggage storage, free boarding pass printer in lobby, great staff and very near a bus stop for trips into West Hollywood or Venice Beach for under $2. Downsides were some plane noise (unavoidable near an airport), and ever so slightly tired decor but got a very good rate by shopping around. I'll be staying here from now on, I think.

Hi Cat, sorry, didn't realise this. Just thought you were putting off driving until the next day. In which case the Renaissance, Hilton or Westin would be fine. I think Mr F summed it up. The properties are mostly OK for an overnight but all feel a bit tired. I quite liked the lounge food at the Renaissance - like you I don't want much but find my palate is a bit jaded after a day's flying. Each property will have somewhere within it to eat, but there aren't really any places to stroll to.

That's the other thing that was on my mind - I guess we wouldn't be looking to wander far and we'll also be very tired after the long flight, but ideally, somewhere to have a short stroll would be good. May not be possible, will have the weigh up the pros and cons.

Thanks for everyone's help!

Wandering near or far in that neighborhood is not a good idea, while it's by no means the worst area in LA it's certainly not the best, grab a cab, if you want something quick and easy go to In n Out, if your looking for something a little more formal go to the Buggy Whip, both are a 5 minute drive away.

When I stayed at the Renaissance, we walked around the corner (two minute walk) to Champions Bar at the Marriott for some comfort bar-food and drinks before bed.
