My first TR, and first transatlantic flight in 10 years following my Virgin Flying Without Fear course in January, so be gentle with me! This was a trip to take my two children (ages 8 and 6) to meet Mickey etc, and for my husband to get to a conference in Orlando one night of the trip. I did online checkin the day before and was really pleased to see we had seats in 72 and 73 H and K in the bubble - the wonderful Roxy-Popsy was going to be on the same flight and we exchanged a few messages and she confirmed these were great seats. We took the train down to Gatwick from our home in Herts at 6am (having only told the children at 5am that we were off to Orlando - they had no idea!) and arrived at Gatwick to join the bag drop line and get boarding passes at 7.30am. There was a very short wait in the PE/Upper line, so 2 minutes later we were stood in front of the check-in agent (who I have to say wasn't very friendly - I don't think she looked up once), and it all started to go pear-shaped. She swiped our passports, frowned and asked if we'd done ESTA, which I confirmed we had, and produced the paper confirmations. She made a phone call and then told us that the ESTA website was down, so we couldn't complete check-in and would have to return later. The much friendlier agent manning entrance to the PE line was incredulous as we trailed sadly out with our bags and said this had never happened before, but in 20 minutes it should be fine. We went upstairs to the nasty crowded coffee area with all our cases, then struggled back 30 minutes later to a now considerable queue. ESTA was still down, so all passengers for US flights were corralled in a separate queue area and we stood there for about an hour (!) not moving at all. At this point ESTA apparently began to work again, but they needed to check in the VS27 passengers urgently, so we stood there some more while they were called forward. We finally got our boarding passes at 9.30am, and then joined the heaving queue for "Fast" Track security, then made our way to the V Room via the Superdry shop.

The V Room was fantastic after all the madness of bag drop and security. We didn't see much of our children at all as they loved the games so much, so my other half and I drank teas and coffees and watched the planes landing and taking off from our great vantage point over the South terminal runway. This was actually fantastic for me as a nervous flier - you can see how easy and normal it all looks, and I felt much calmer about the flight by the time we were called to Gate 17, at 12.15pm. The children were issued with their K-iD backpacks as our boarding passes were scanned, and they were thrilled. At this stage I started feeling really anxious about the flight again (seeing the crowds at the gate always does that to me), so I got out the litlle laminated card we got on the flying course and went through the ideas there. We boarded Virginia Plain and made our way up to the Bubble, and on first impression I was very impressed; it was calm and quiet, and felt very spacious. Just as I was starting to worry again, the lovely Roxy-Popsy suddenly appeared at my side and introduced herself to us all, then very sweetly gave me a lovely bag of goodies she'd gathered at various points, including chocolates, shortbread squares, blue overshoes, a game of aeroplane bingo to play with the children, a Florida guidebook, and a coveted silver VS pen with a little red plane tail on it! I was beyond thrilled, it was so kind and made me completely forget to be scared after she went back to the UC cabin for takeoff. Takeoff at about 1.30pm was very smooth (and they didn't seem to do that 'reduce power' thing immediately after takeoff that makes you feel like you're falling, so I was very happy). I sat with my 6-year-old son and managed to stay totally calm for him too, which was great. The inflight entertainment started soon after we reached cruise height, and it was the Odyssey system, which actually I thought was rather good. I watched Easy A and played a LOT of Tetris, and kept checking the SkyMap to see where we were. Both children were fully occupied watching Despicable Me, Megamind, and the Disney channel throughout the flight. We had pre dinner drinks, then I had the chicken and hubby had the beef (both lovely). Minor gripe that neither child had a child meal despite requesting them weeks in advance, but the lovely cabin crew wrote down our return flight details to ensure we'd get them then. We had a Baileys after dinner, then later an ice cream run too. Oh, and one other minor gripe.....how hopeless are the wineglasses in PE?  They are only just shorter than the trolley slots they sit in, so a couple were broken as the cabin crew lifted trays out of the trolley (cue broken glass on the cabin floor), then a couple more went as people dropped them - they are made out of very thin glass. I appreciate the nice idea of proper wineglasses, but they need to be MUCH sturdier in the PE cabin environment.

Roxy-Popsy popped back up to see how I was faring a couple of times, bless her, and then she took me down to meet two of her lovely daughters (sat in downstairs PE) and I also met Mr R-P and saw the UC cabin. I sat in R-P's seat in UC and the cabin crew there kindly offered me a drink from the amazing bar, so I had a G&T and chatted with R-P as she sat on her ottoman. The UC cabin was fabulous; I'd never been in it before (definitely now an aspiration in future!), though I felt slightly ashamed being in rather 'relaxed' sportswear (sorry UC cabin!). Unfortunately the seatbelt light then came on for light turbulence, so I had to go back upstairs. With my G&T, of course.....my husband was very jealous! :D R-P took a couple of photos of me with her daughters in PE, and in the UC cabin with Mr R-P, which I'm happy for her to post if she wants to!

The rest of the flight was very relaxed and I felt very calm, and really excited about my first trip to Florida. We landed at about 5pm and were rapidly into the Immigration queue (where we said a fond farewell to R-P and family as they wound past us), then were admitted without incident, and off to Alamo to pick up our car.

Overall, it was a GREAT flight - the food, entertainment and cabin crew all excellent I thought, but it was meeting R-P and her fun but reassuring presence that really made the experience special. I think all nervous flyers should be paired up with a V Flyer regular from now on, it was quite brilliant! It also meant that I spent my time in Orlando with no worrying about the flight home at all, which was a first for me.

Thank you, Roxy-Popsy! oo)

Now the return flight was a whole different story.......I will try to get to that tomorrow!

Lovely TR and kudos to Roxy-Popsy for her support during your flight and kudos to you for conquering your fears. I'm sure you had your reward when you saw your children's faces when you told them you were all going to Orlando

So glad your flight was a success after all your concerns.

Did you really have to big up R-P so much though as I will now have to check if her head will fit through the door of the pub we are going to for lunch next week :D ):

No seriously she is good fun to travel with and always has a bag full of treats to while away the hours.

So happy the CC's all helped in making it a memorable trip too.

Well done you |:)

What a lovely TR and a joy to read. Ms R-P sounds like a wonderful lady and a joy to have her on the same flight as you - I am glad the flight worked out for you.
Thank you so much for taking the time to write a very enjoyable TR.

'a game of aeroplane bingo to play with the children,'

I can't take all the credit for this as Sunshine gave me a set for my birthday last year - a real qualiteee pressie ;)

It's not easy to play when there are 2 V-flyers, & both their families on board spread out in UC, the bubble & front row of PE but it does make it entertaining.

Sunshine always finds me fab pressies y)

Smashing first TR. Get a good sense of your excitement from your writing! y)

How did you find the Flying without fear course? I used to be a terrible flyer (mainly due to a very bad first flight!) and have got much better after flying more frequently. Have been thinking about this course for my mum as she is petrified of flying still and would be interested to know your thoughts as to whether or not it helped and was worthwhile.

Terrific TR - thanks for sharing.

And, fantastic to see the VF community working so well!!!

BTW - what is airplane bingo, and where can I get it?

Funny about surprising your children.

In Dec 2009, I'd organised a 10-day trip to WDW for my then 7 year old daughter, and kept it completely secret until we arrived at the airport - she thought the taxi was taking us to stay with a friend!!

At check-in, I told her where she was going, expecting a "thanks dad, brilliant, can't wait...".....

But got "oh, I was lloking forward to some time at home, and I don't like surprises like that..." followed by me being asked to make a solumn promise that I'd never surprise her like that again!

Well, you can't win them all!

Dan, the Flying Without Fear course was very good indeed; lots of personal attention due to high staff:participant ratio, and very reassuring to have a Captain to answer all our weird and wacky questions. You end up with a good set of psychological tools to try on the flight (and to prepare for it) - they give you a CD and a little laminated card of the various techniques, and it was the little card that I used to help get me on the plane when nerves struck at the gate! The feeling after successfully doing the flight is amazing. Highly recommended.

Concorde, LOL on the rather un-Disneylike reaction of your daughter!! Mine were rather tired and bewildered when woken at 5am with the great news, but it sunk in as we travelled to Gatwick and they were going off like popcorn in the V Room!

The V Room is an ideal place -especially for the kids and it is good to hear it helped you with your anxiety

Having too meet RP, I know full well how you were entertained throughout the flight ;) Hope the kids wanted to get off the plane to see Mickey et al

I would have filmed the slightly different response and then sent it off to be used in those Disney TV ads at the moment.

There was a family on the news yesterday looking at booking olympic tickets.

Mum said going to the Games would be their family holiday next year.

Whilst mum was blabbering on about this a look of sheer horror started to creep over the face of the young teenage daughter ...

'a game of aeroplane bingo to play with the children,'

This so simple but fun, & a good distraction for nervous pax or to keep children (or adults) amused.

It's on a board (you get about a dozen in a pack), boards are approx 16cms x 21 cms. Each player is given a board, each board has 25 pop up squares each with the same with 25 pictures on it, e.g. mountain, captain, crying baby, seat belt sign, laptop, newspaper, cloud.

When you see what's on the board you pop up the picture. The first person to get 5 in a row, either horizontally, vertically or a diagonal wins & gets to sit in the window seat/aisle seat/have a turn of the noise cancelling headphones you just bought in duty free ;)

The boards can be used time & again.

Sunshine bought me a pack for my birthday last year but I don't know where she got them from, I would imagine Florida though.
