I'm not quite sure what possessed me to book a 6 hour connection on the same day as the internation flight - when it came to it, it definitely felt like the wrong decision.

Having just completed the 7 and half hour flight from LHR to JFK in UC, the idea of 6 hours in AA coach was terrifying!

Both my partner and I were very ill between flights! At one point I was steering towards cancelling the connection and crashing the night in JFK, picking up the connection in the morning but we pushed forward.

I had already checked in the night before this flight and printed boarding passes in the LHR CH. The seating config on the B737 was 3-3 and we had initially selected 25 A and B.

Got the Airtrain from JFK terminal 4 to terminal 8 for AA - I must say this was really straightforward and easy - only took 5 mins on the airtrain.

Arrived at Terminal 8 - a very nice terminal, modern feel! Found the self service check in, but I wanted to ask about moving to an exit row so did queued for a desk checkin. The first class seats were $225 PP and having seen the domestic first seats I know this wasn't worth the money!

The lady was very nice and talkative - she said that because we had already come in on an international flight today, we wouldn't have to pay the $25 per bag to check in - nice $50 saved there and she kindly checked us in to row 14 E and F - RESULT!

We then headed to security - a sham as always, heaving and only 2 scanners open. I quickly realised my mistake, my lovely, very expensive after shave I purchased at LHR was over the 3.0 fl oz limit - damn!! Clearly the tiredness playing a bit now! The bottle was worth over $70 so I had no choice but to check one of our handluggage bags as hold baggage for $35 - it was a cost but cheaper than throwing it!

Anyway - once resolved, we got through security and had around an hour before scheduled boarding - plenty of time to relax we thought - no, I was so ill during this time it was horrible! - that's enough info on that point now!

Anyway, we went to sit at the gate (42) to await boarding - departure was due to 20:05, we boarding around 19:40. Upon entering the flight, it was evident the plant was old - a few screens handing from the ceiling and worn furniture. The bonus was that the flight was quite empty so we ended up with the 3 between us - a god send as the seats were crammed and very uncomfortable (it didn't help havin just come off a VS UC seat!).

Very quickly everyone was seating, after loading their carry on items - why do americans feel the need to take so much carry on - I'm pretty certain that UK airlines would insist on checking some of the bags that were allowed as carry on, the overhead bins were full and the flight was 75% so I can't imagine what it would be like when full!

We were away on time and a quick flight time of 5 hrs 9 minutes.

To be honest, I just wanted to sleep. There were 3 crew, 1 for first and 2 in coach. They offered a drink service but that was it - they were not big on selling snacks or food, it even said in the leaflet that they encourage passengers to bring their own!

The lights were dimmed and the flight went fairly quickly, very turbulent at times. I had the most annoying women across the aisle from me - blaring her music for most of the flight, how she could hear anything after amazes me!

We touched down in LAS at around 10:30p,, straight out to collect bags and joined the small tsxi line and off to the hotel!

I would chose to fly anyone else but AA in future, it's a budget airline at best!

Ugh - shame you didn't get one of AA's newer 738s ... hope LV was great though!

AA, United, US, Delta are all much of a (usually pretty rubbish) muchness!

Just wish VX increased their routes and had better flight times - trip report to follow from my VX flights to SFO last week!

I have to agree, the new 738's are nice, not as nice as VX upfront, but coach isn't bad.

Actually I quite like AA :| (maybe I've just been lucky on domestic and transatlantic trips ): ).I find their battle- axe flight attendants and "rules" about where you can move in the cabins strangely comforting :).

I think they may be related to Mr Fuss Pot Purser on my DL Flight LHR-JFK

Did you fly an MD80? Fun they are not. Alas, you have learned at your expense the harsh reality of american legacy carriers.

If you are flying out of a hub (which JFK is for AA) and fly less than 100k a year, you're nothing. And once you've bought a plane, unfortunately it has a shelf life far superior than its interior would suggest, though AA's MD80s are pushing it. A plane which entered service in 1998, say, has a good deal of shelf life left in it, in fact is at its money making peak for the airline unless it is a total fuel hog, yet its interior gives you more or less the same feeling that the cheesy local pub of that time would have for you today. It can't compare with VX. So the airlines shamelessly buy our loyalty by chucking upgrades at us FFers and generally ensuring we are well drunk during a 6 hour transcon.

Leaving JFK at 8pm after a TATL flight? Brutal. Well done.
