I do with they would put up a message

'we are doing maintenance work and expect it to finish at XX@XX time'

rather than

'your account is currently unavailable'

The first gives an explanation and time frame and stops people calling unnecessarily.

The second just puts peoples backs up and gets them worried and more likely to phone up and take up staff time.

Bt d'oh this is VS we are talking about and not a rational organisaton
