I have never really agree with the American tipping culture but I do abide by them when I am in the US. This topic has been raised in other forums and it is always because the waitstaff are badly paid.
Now if I am not mistaken the waitstaff salary are paid by their employer (just like everyone else in the world) and not by the customers. They are short changed by their bosses and why should the customers make up their poor salary by tipping I really do not know. The meal prices in the US are not exactly very cheap either and adding an extra 15-20% for tipping it becomes a very expensive meal.
