So I think I'm going to plump for either the Ibis there or the Premier Inn both at around 40 quid a night. Any thoughts on which one might be better? Is it safe to travel from the airport tube station to the hotels on Bath Road?

Premier Inn is fine, nice and modern/clean, and as a "bed for the night", we'd go there again. some of the bigger brands are quite dated and overpriced. Premier Inn also has airy lobby with a Costa Coffee bar

There are good reliable shuttles for the airport to the hotels, minimal cost and very routine. Suggest seek out one of these from arrivals area as best way to hotel.

Not stayed in either so will leave it to someone more informed to offer an opinion.

You can get to the hotels from the airport using the Hoppa bus or according to this website you can take a free bus to the Sheraton Skyline and then it is a short walk to the Ibis? http://www.londontoolkit.com/lhr/hotel_hoppa_bus.htm (right at the bottom of the page).

I'd personally go for the Premier Inn (which I have stayed in and is perfectly fine). Never stayed at an IBIS in the UK but the ones in France are very very basic.

The IBIS I stayed in (at CDG airport), whilst clean and secure had no air conditioning in the small bedroom and had an even smaller bathroom barely big enough to turn round in.

Have you looked at the Travelodge, they usually have sale type fares on (think it is £15 rooms currently).

We have stayed there the last couple of times (on the £9 sale offer) and it has been absolutely fine for one night.

I usually stay overnight at the Premier Inn on Bath Road, its perfectly ok

Buses 105 and 111 and the N9 nightbus stop outside. They go to/from Central Bus Station Heathrow, and I think the N9 goes on to T5

The Heathrow Express goes from T5 to T3. It takes about 4 minutes and is free.

Just make sure you jump on a inter terminal HEX and not the straight through to Paddington one, which happened to this American guy on Thursday morning, he dived onto our carriage, then double checked with us, to find it was a non-stop to Paddington... :|
He was only trying to transfer terminals to meet a friend..! Ooops. The HEX staff were great with him, personally escorting him to the right train once at Paddington..

I agree the HEX can get a bit confusing having 2 platforms and numerous train options depending which terminal you need to get to and which direction you are going in (T5 and T4 use different trains from the central station). There's then also long and short trains too so even if you are on the right platform you might not be stood in the right place to get on the train!!! I agree though the HEX staff are always very friendly and more than willing to offer assistance.

Just remember there are no stops in-between terminals, so if you are just transferring terminals get ready to get off at the next station.

Thanks for the advice. I might just book the Travellodge at T5 now seeing as its easyish to get to T3 from there and its only 20 quid. The prem Inn does look nicer but for the sake of one night I'm not really too fussed. I'm sure I've stayed in worse places than most of the Heathrow hotels

Depending on how many travelling and amount of baggage, it can be cheaper, quicker and easier to get a taxi from the hotel to the terminal.

Door-to-door with minimal lugging bags makes for a much less stressful start to a trip. Most hotels have a price list at reception

Have you looked at the Travelodge Heathrow Central? It is on the Bath Road and probably a little easier than the T5 one.

Agree with Darren, when there are 2 or more of you, and a fair bit of luggage, a taxi is a better idea than the Hoppa - for which you can be stuck waiting for ages. I can't remember the last time I did a Hoppa, but then again I travel fairly light, and use the free buses around the perimeter. I often overnight at LHR, and drop into London to meet, eat, drink, etc etc. I've ridden the tube to Hatton Cross and taken the free bus back to the hotel pretty late at night, always absolutely safe, there is typically a lot of traffic on those buses from people going into work for late shifts so it's not really a barren landscape.

Wherever you choose to stay, do think about ear plugs because there can be lots of doors slamming as folks come in & go out all through the night/morning.

It can mean the difference between a nights sleep or not a nights sleep. This does apply to virtually any hotel within any airport area.

Also would it be worth it to get a breakfast included or am I better off going to find breakfast at the airport? I'm taking it I'll have to check out at 11 and my flights not until 4 so I'll have some time

I booked the travelodge no breakfast. I'm not reknowned for being an early riser and if I do get up early will probably go somewhere at Heathrow for food

There's an M&S food store in T5 if you'll be passing through anyway, I usually pop in there if in need of snacking.
