All, I am sharing here the contents of a snail-mail letter I sent to VS today.

I've been known to pass comment on this forum about this policy, so am doing something more positive about it, and invite comment from other V-Flyers.

Flying Club: <My FC Number>

Dear Sir, Madam,

I am writing in respect of Virgin Atlantic’s policy of not rewarding children’s flights with loyalty miles and the absence of a Household account facility.

Having completed, or have booked, 11 return flights since 2008 with more planned for 2012 and beyond, I am becoming increasingly irked that my daughter’s flights are not eligible for Flying Club miles, and that she cannot hold a Flying Club account, nor is there a facility for a household account. (My wife also has a Flying Club account – <My Wife's FC Number>).

I cannot understand why this policy exists – I currently also collect British Airways miles, and my daughter collects Executive club miles, as well as the family having a Household account.

My strong preference is to fly Virgin whenever I can, but this continued lack of reward for loyalty being shown to my daughter is becoming an increasingly important point for me, that has lead me to consider whether to move my flights plus credit card points collection etc over to BA. I’d very much rather not do this, but if I get increased miles awarded for our family trips, plus the flexibility of the household account, easier reward redemption opportunities as well as a more comprehensive route network – well, my loyalty is being tested a little.

It has been said that the kids packs go some way to rewarding children but this is a nonsense really.
My daughter has received just 3 of these in the many legs we have flown, and she is bored with them, and refused the third on the basis that she’s got the book, has lots of pens, and really doesn’t want another cheap baseball cap, nor the bag it comes in. By implication, you’ll see that many flights have gone by without her even being offered this rather second-rate gift.

I am at a loss to understand why the frequent flyer scheme is not extended to children, whom I know VAA deem as important customers. This is especially true when some of your strongest competitors offer such rewards.

This letter is not a threat or ultimatum, it’s an expression of my disappointment and confusedness, frankly.

I’d be very keen to understand the rationale behind this decision, and if there is none, whether VAA would re-consider this strange policy in the absnce of a rationale.

I look forward to your reply with great interest.

Yours sincerely,

<My Name>

Absolutely support this! Great letter and I hope VS listen.

Worth mentioning that VS gives miles for pets flying but not children in a seat?

Does that only happen whilst you are "active" gold? What if you are gold then slip to silver?

I agree with the letter whole-heartedly....

l) Family Account membership is valid as long as the Gold member retains Gold status and holds a valid Flying Club Gold membership card.

m) Should the Gold member fail to retain Gold status, the Family Account will be suspended forthwith. Should the member re-qualify for Gold status at a later date, they may re-apply, subject to the Flying Club Terms & Conditions

Seems mad to me - unnecessarily over-complicated.... Family accounts available to all would make much more sense (like BA).

Great letter C-rip.
Worth a note you'll get a stock "if you're Gold" based response, so I'd add comment re this..
Also Why 75% rule can't be applied, assume the math is too tricky??!
If you are Silver why the he'll would you continually want 2nd rate kids packs on every flight, you are silver because you fly more than the "annual holiday"

Nh - knew I could rely on you! Letter is posted, some no amendments possible, I'm afraid.

I'm vaguely aware of the AU status thing - does this mean it's VS policy to only encourage offspring of AU members?

As my (quite extensive, I think, my average standards), leisure travel sustains me at AG, I'm very unlikely to make AU any time soon.

Unless my employer starts sending me abroad - which isn't beyond the realms of possibility - but the irony is, my daughter wouldn't be travelling!!!

Ah well, let's see what happens.....probably nothing, but I did assure a certain V-Flyer member that I would write on this matter to VS, so there we go.

AG are Generally those leisure travels " who spend more than your base B&S pax", can under stand VS's reluctance to kick miles to one-off's traveling with X number of kids, however, AG leisure travellers who persistantly head to VS a few times a year are the ones getting disgruntled and they can pick/swap at will dependent on £ and/or incentives....

The problem for Virgin is if they offer family accounts to everyone, yes it would be in line with BA, but they then have even less of a reason to be Gold FC. They need to have a look at FC to make all levels more desirable, especially for Gold members flying UC. One can dream.

For vast majority of family fliers Gold is not an option. However lucrative PE fares are often the main haunt of Silver holders often with 1 or more kids. Or those doing a couple of hol flights in UC. Seems bizarre that these generally consistent customers are being rattled by a worthy incentive that could stop them crossing to the dark side....the cost to VS is minimal however the loss of say 3 + PE fares surely isn't in the currently climate...
Silver isn't really aimed at frequent fliers it is a way of holding those "inbetweeners" shame they can't see this?

Well, Virgin do have a habit of mucking about with their frequent flyer system to the detriment in most cases of their loyal passengers.
Was anyone else here a member of Freeway?

I made Silver and was informed that this was for life with no downgrading, then they got rid of Freeway and replaced it with FC and my Silver for life died :D

The situation with no points for children is annoying as we have paid for their seats without any thnaks really from VS.

Well, I got an email response to my letter.

Much as expected, I guess, not sure whether I should post the content due to copyright etc, but...

Kids packs, seatback TV screen plus dedicated childrens channels/games etc all quoted as adequate provision.

Thank you for your letter, Comments passed on, really sorry, no changes planned - blur, blur, blur.

I guess I didn't expect any other response really, but I've registered my thoughts on the matter, and that's it really - you pays your money, and you makes your choice...

Disappointing, but expected.

Mods please advise as to whether I can post the content of the email...
