AIUI Americans have rental car coverage with their credit cards pretty universally (like we have with Amex Platinum) so most only take the minimum coverage, hence any additional insurance is an add-on when booking with the US sites?

That's what's always put me off booking that way - I know the Americans have insurance covered in othere ways, at least sometimes. Start adding them in for those folks from the UK and it always looks pretty expensive. But maybe there's something I don't know..... I don't have a platinum card...

I have an AMEX plat but really struggled getting a good deal without the extra fees/insurances that the AMEX insurance covers. When I went for an all inclusive package it cost me something like 30 quid more for a week and for that I get the pre paid fuel and an additional driver as well as all the additional insurance (which AMEX would've covered). Total of £149 for an intermediate for a week.
Sure I know the pre-paid fuel is a scam and bringing it back full is slightly cheaper but the additional driver on top of that just made it easier all round to still book the all inclusive package and not much/anymore than going without the extra insurances.

This was booked through carhire3000 and I'll be going straight to the DE desk at MCO on Monday :D

I arrived on Friday (29th) and had booked with Dollar through Netflights and pre-registering on the Dollar site with my Netflights confirmation number.

I went straight to the DE desk and had no problems using my card, they had all my details. I had booked a convertible but someone had just let the last one go from the VIP row.

We were told to take anything we wanted from any row and had to go back to the airport yesterday to pick up a convertible. Not exactly convenient but we made use of the 'free fuel' on Saturday morning before the exchange. We now have a lovely Mustang with a full leather interior and only a few miles on the clock, so it's worked out OK.

We had no trouble at all.

As I came out of the lifts a dollar employee actually saw my DE card and just sent me over the road.

Once at the DE It took about 5 minutes to process us and we got 'upgraded' to a huge ugly Ford Taurus from the VIP lane. Far too big for our needs but I wasn't complaining. we weren't offered a choice of cars but none of the rental cars on offer excite me anyway, compared to my own car anyway :D
