There has been a new major eruption in Iceland.

It is larger than the Eyjafjallajökull volcano that caused all the disruption last time.
There are reports though that the ash is much coarser so will not hang around in the atmosphere for so long.

Already an exclusion zone that may prevent Iceland being used for diversions.

Icelanders are playing it down

"We do not expect the Grimsvotn eruption to affect air traffic to and from the country in any way"

Probably not the beginning of the end of the world either for those disappointed by not being "raptured" yesterday

Some Icelandic airspace now closed, 120 miles around the volcano :(

Perhaps the industry and regulators have learned a few lessons.

Perhaps not time to panic?

Is giving accurate information alarming people?
It is something we should be watching.

There are new procedures in the Met. office.

They now produce pretty pictures ii)

The ash cloud progress can be clearly seen and aircraft will avoid it - there is no "alarm" there.
As to whether flights will be disrupted, that will very much depend upon the particle size, wind direction and crucially how long the eruption continues. This volcano has a history of large explosions followed by a decrease in activity - but it will not be considered dormant again until ~3 months without activity.

At the moment the jet stream is keeping it well away but then look at Thursday in this forecast.

If the eruption is still continuing then at similar levels, there does appear to be risk of disruption but as I mentioned in my first post, the ash is reported to be much coarser. We await analysis.

We are all doomed !

Simon Calder has been wheeled out to spout his so called 'expertise' which will no doubt worry the general populace unnecessarily

There was no mention of it when this volcano erupted in 2004 and airlines coped by re-routing round it. Now, because of Eyj.....Eyf....Eye....Eywhatsitsname everyone has gone into panic mode :(!

Just what I was thinking - and I wonder how many other times in relatively recent years a volcano has erupted and it hasn't even made the news, let alone made airlines panic???

And of course we have our wonderful met. office to show us that it's not coming anywhere near us anytime soon. ):

:0 Or do they! :0

I should stress the above chart is for flight levels up to 20,000'
But it's probably the one that will appear on the news when they eventually find it. It is also not strictly the Met. office but the new combined VAAC.
There are warnings and the complete set of graphics here and the full CAA/ICAO procedures can be downloaded from here and here.
Worth a read if you wish to fully understand the true relevance of news put out by the media.

May be for lower levels only but then I guess the aircraft do have to take off and land.
