I have just checked in for VS24, coming home tonight from LAX. When I checked in the lady at the desk said "Oh I see you have ordered a special meal". I replied, "No I haven't, I never do".

Apparently I have a vegan special meal with no root vegetables awaiting me on board!!!! Codenamed JNML. :$

Has anyone else ever had this happen to them?

I write this from the NZ lounge where I'm tucking in to a tasty beef and turkey sandwich and a Steinlager Pure.

Just follow the screams when your 'Vegan no root veggies" friend comes face to face with his/her chicken and mash - then swap!

Yes, I had it on my first long-haul flight with BA from JNB. When I checked in the check-in agent said "And you have a vegetarian meal ordered" I told her I hadn't and gave a half-laugh of disbelief whereupon I was treated to a lecture that this was a very serious matter and certainly no laughing matter. In vain did I protest I had not ordered a special meal. The computer (an ancient one in 1984) does not lie! v(

Fast forward to the flight. The cabin crew arrived with my veggie meal and when I protested I hadn't ordered one she replaced it, banging it down with such a force that it hopped up in a dead cat bounce! :0 The same happened for brekkie! :o)

I could be making this up but I thought Jain meals could only be ordered on the DEL route where they are quite popular.

You shouldn't have a problem switching meals onboard though.

Due to a mix up with expedia - i'd opened the drop down pick list accidently and the selection changed from 'none' - when booking a UA flight about 10 years ago I somehow ordered a baby meal for myself.

The first I knew was when the CC on the flight came up to me with a list and asked me to check my special meal order! When I checked my printed itinerrary it was listed there in small letters !

Luckily it was a quiet flight so no problems getting a propper grown up meal !

Don't assume the quality of vegan/vegetarian meals is the same - it all depends on where is producing it. I think it was ex-Japan where the vegan meal looked amazing!

Home safely and to complete the story, the lady at check-in was very helpful and tried calling someone (not sure who). She did not get a satisfactoy answer, so she told me to ask the FSM:
"She is the one with the black blouse" :) and explain the error and ask for something else.

Boading was a breeze, properly segregated so UC, PE and AU could board without pushing, and as I got on the plane, the FSM was one of the meet and greeters. I explained what check-in had told me and she was very helpful. My steward was the other meet and greeter, so she said:
"L*** here will look after you". oo)

And so he did, very well. The vegan meal never turned up and everyone lived happily ever after. y)
