Hello,

Just a quick question.

My understand is as follows:

- Reward fares (i.e. SFO UC 100,000 miles) you still earn miles/TP's as normal plus any AG/AU miles bonuses.

- M+M fares - no miles or TP's or bonuses.

Well that was my understand, however, whilst making enquiries this morning, I was told you do not earn TP/Miles or AU/AG bonuses on REWARD fares too. - This was from someone in the Swansea CC.

Was I incorrect or has something changed? (Or was the person I spoken to wrong?!).

Before I call back, it would be good to hear v-flyer thoughts.

Many thanks,

Luke

Reward flights have never earned miles & TP's

You cant expect to earn miles on tickets bought with miles/points

3.1.4 Miles and tier points will be issued only for flights actually flown by you and will be based on the class of ticket you have paid for and will not reflect any complimentary or reward upgrades. Miles and tier points will only be credited once travel has been completed, not at time of booking. Miles and tier points cannot be earned on any free or reduced rate tickets including, without limitation, reward travel, upgraded reward travel and travel agent or industry discounts, Vex Courier, Miles Plus Money, airport revenue upgrades, child or infant and complimentary tickets. Miles and tier points have no cash value and are not exchangeable under any circumstances for cash

Whilst there have been instances where M+M fares have been allocated miles and TPs these are generally system errors and the exception.

Tthere have been complaints on here in the past where a pax was given them on one flight but not another and demanding to know when the riles changed!

Rewards have never qualified for either and it would be totally illogical if they did. so not sure how you thought they did

As Penny has pointed out, full reward fares do not and never have earned miles or TP's. This is the same on most airlines, as it doesn't make sense for them to give you miles when you aren't spending any money on the fare.

Though if you do buy a fare and upgrade using miles you still get the miles and TPs for the original fare.

So I once bought a K In PE but upgraded to UC for cash and miles at LHR and I still got my PE miles and TPs

Yes Neil, I also agree totally with this policy.
However M + M is a different issue in my opinion.

I have always argued from this stand point:- If I go into
Sainsburys and use £500 worth of their rewards to purchase a £1000 tv, I will always get reward points on the remaining £500 which I hand over in cash. To me this is the same as buying fares using Miles + Money.

Last year I spent thousands of pounds on fares to Orlando for this April 2011. I used 7500 miles each towards a PE fare.
This brought the cost of the fare down by just £50

I believe Virgin are mean not to give miles on the cash part of
a M+M fare. When I upgraded from Economy to UC they did allocate both Rewards & TP on the economy part of that fare, so I find it confusing.

As I have pointed out before, they did use to give 'Miles & TPs' out on M+M fares back in the "good old days" and I have still got paper fying club statements to prove this was their policy. It happened loads of times and wasn't a computer error.

I guess it comes down to choice at the end of the day. As long as you are made fully aware you won't earn miles and TP's when booking an MPM fare, then you really can't have to much of a complaint.

If you know you won't earn miles, and choose to still make a MPM booking to make the saving, then you have made an informed choice and have no reason to complain.

I am not trying to be confrontational but just because you 'do' something, doesn't always mean you are happy about it and voicing an opinion could lead to a re-think on policy. Complaining vs giving an opinion, do not have to be the same.

Hev yes VS could review their policy and say offer 50% of miles or TPs for a M+M fare but equally they could say 'stuff it' and cease offering M+M fares at .

Afterall they don't have to offer m+m fares and I bet every once in a while VS will look at the scheme to see if is benefiting them and once it stops that then the offer will go completely.

I can't see any logic in offering any miles for a m&m ticket, would effectively just cost less miles?

Though I would like to see TPs for full reward tickets, but I know it won't happen, so I won't cry.
