So this flight was going to get me back to FC Gold :) NJ was really really hot and the day before this flight there were some bad storms.

This UC experience didn't start off the best - the CDC arrived on time but insisted that the traffic from Princeton to JFK would be really bad - his sat-nav told him so - so he insisted that the quickest route would be to wind all the way through Brooklyn. Plausible I thought given it was 1pm on a Friday. A very stop-start ride through Brooklyn was provided, lurching around corners and trying to beat lights in a Lincoln Town Cruiser. All I can say is I am glad I don't get travel sick! The route did, however, confirm that I never want to go back to Brooklyn, a place where every 3rd high street establishment was a funeral director!!

So we arrived at check-in 2 hours after departing, much relieved. The check-in agent was really nice and jokey and so was the staffer making sure you were in the right place y) CH invite in hand we were looking forward to 3 or so hours in there. Pleasant greeting done, shock horror there was a colleague at the bar who had left the very same office 1 hour after we did and was there already!! So no need for the route we took!! n(

Anyway, champers in hand, nothing took my fancy on the menu as I'd had lunch at 12 so I had the cheese washed down with a few glasses of Washington Cab Sav - very nice. CH was pretty busy but the service was still good.

The flight was called around 6.20 - fast track security line was moving slower than the regular v( and were filtering together at the end - painful. A VS staffer was calling VS pax through to the front, p*ssing off everyone else but the seemed pleased with VS initiative and queried why their airline wasn't doing it!

G-VROC was waiting at gate B30 with priority boarding in place so walked straight on. Welcomed by name at the door but a very pretty young lady :| who would turn out to be looking after the A Zone :P Dinner orders taken and breakfast card completed, we pushed back a bit late and took off about 7.50. Runway 22R I think. Before we took off the FSM came on and said that they were at minimum crew so "please bear with us etc etc as we could have cancelled the flight etc etc" - the way she stumbled through the various announcements she made wasn't overly impressive....

Anyway, airborne and we took a left course immediately and started a very steep bank which gave the impression we were heading straight into the water :0 but we obviously weren't!! Once the seatbelt signs were off the crew went about delivering dinner. No post-take off drink offered ?| but I had some red with the cold supper tray - it was alright - the chicken breast was small but moist. I watched half an hour of John Bishop with dinner and didn't feel tired afterwards so decided to go to the bar for a night cap.

There were 2 crew loitering around it on and off so I can only assume the crew in Y were short staffed? With 350 odd on board I suspect it would have been some pretty grumpy people down back. Anyway, at the bar there was a couple who seemed to be on a special holiday heading home - they ate at the bar and were chatting to the FSM. She disappeared down back with 2 glasses of champagne and came back with 2 men :0 who plonked themselves at the bar..... which was now full v( I thought they were off duty pilots as the crew seemed to know them but after eavesdropping :w it seemed they were some sort of coppers/detectives/into spying or something.

After 2 generous brandies I decided to bed down. I was mid-conversion when the very pretty CC appeared from out of nowhere in the dark A Zone to help me out y) The flight was smooth so I managed to get 3.5 hours of kip or so but struggled to get off initially as I couldn't get comfortable. I did, obviously, and next thing I knew I was woken by said very pretty CC for breakfast, which was on the tray as soon as I had got back from freshening up y)

The bacon roll and fruit was good but the coffee dire (bit of a snob on that front). Decided to head to the bar to see what was going down and our 2 men (spy's or whatever) were back there for breakfast - now with a full (i.e. all seats sold) UC, why would you let 2 people from Y come up to the bar twice in the flight????? Grabbed some fresh fruit and then had to head back as we were starting our decent.

Didn't circle much and a very smooth landing (though the nose wheel seemed in the air for ages after the main gear came down) we were on gate bang on schedule. Had a nice parting smile/eye contact from the very pretty cabin crew girl who was stood by the A door - she was great CC and a credit to the airline ^)

Immigration dead and luggage out quickly - it took precisely 32 minutes to get from 12K to the back seat of the CDC!

So, in summary, a great flight with some minor annoyances and I'm now back into hallowed FC AU :D

Thanks for the TR. Congrats on your status ! I haven't seen breakfast cards on a few trips now and thought they were obsolete. Perhaps they are only on certain routes ?

Sounds like you had the same driver as the one who picked me up in Hackensack a few weeks ago, then also insisted on driving through Brooklyn ... I couldn't tell if it was quicker, but a very similar experience.

I wish JFK would sort out their security!

Thanks for the TR David, pleased to hear you are back with us in AU land. Lets hope we can keep it again next year!

When I flew into JFK a couple of months ago the driver did the opposite of your journey. I had that awful stop start schlep through Brooklyn eventually crossin the 59th St bridge (on which there was a breakdown). I'm sure just sticking to the Long Island and Van Wyck Expressways is better.

Guests at the UC bar is a bit odd v( . They are usually careful not to let friends/relatives in PE or Y come up there.
