UK Border Agency to strike

Just heard on radio4 that the UK Border Agency is due to strike from 6pm tonight (29 June 2011) untill midnight 30th June.

Aparantly they (UKBA) have warned BAA to expect long delays as passengers will be held on arriving planes to aviod long queues in the terminals at the few open customs facilities and thus delays expected on departing flights too as they will not be able to turn around the flight fo what may be a prolonged period.

Is EVERYONE striking in the UK? It's tough times, but come on, be glad you have a job! Oh my..

Just watched Sky News and some ridiculous reporter blame BAA for not informing travellers and putting contingencies in operation ... as if BAA control UKBA, doh, I despair of reporters ...

Comments like 'lucky to have a job' really don't help having an informed debate.

People are striking because they have real concerns over their pensions. Teachers for example will be asked to pay in 50% more when the rate goes up from 6 to 9% that's not the same as 3% that the media report.

Yes that's true but the NHS scheme was only reviewed 3 years ago and AGREED changes were made to benefits and contributions that reflected changing life expectancy.

At present the NHS scheme is in surplus of aprox £2 billion per annum when contributions in and payments out are taken into account but rather than set this surplus aside for future use and to build up a sinking fund the Treasury takes it all.

Unfortunately for Everyone Else In The World; they aren't in a Union. Simply; two wrongs don't make a right. "We've been shafted - so should you" isn't really a convincing argument.

Well looks as though I'll get caught in this tomorrow on my way back from Prague.
