Hi - I bought a combi ticket (one half miles, the other cash) on VS200 traveling LHR-HKG and return, PE both ways. On the outbound I'd like to buy an upgrade if poss - anyone have any experience of what this might cost at check in, assuming there were seats?? And is there any haggling, or are we talking take-it-or-leave it?

thanks for help!

Might be on offer in your 'manage my bookings' and if so a price will be displayed. May also be offered at OLCI.

Always worth asking at LHR but I think its a take-it-or-leave-it offer re price.

@ T5isHell did you manage to upgrade? I am about to buy a combi-fare on the same route and would like to upgrade my PE to UC.

Any other experience out there?

I've done this a number of times for my (now adult) children when they travel with me and it is usually about £300 + 20k miles on the day, although slightly cheaper from Sydney.

It will depend how much you paid for your original ticket.
They may have some deals at the airport but this is a VERY busy route and cheap upgrades are very very rare.
If you are holding a full fare PE ticket then it is just a few hundrd quid to UC but if you are on a K then it will cost you a lot more (well over 1000).

In fact I was told last year at check in that they would price it as if I was just buying the UC ticket now (no advance purchase) and then knock off what I paid for the ticket I was holding. Bearing in mind that the walk up fare for UC is about GBP5k you imagine how much that costs.

The best advise is have a figure in mind when you ask. If it is close then grab it. Just beware that you might end up adding the year you were born to what you already paid !
