Hi all. I have enough miles for a economy miles+money flight to Boston next may. Nearly enough for a PE flight. The question is. If I book the economy what category is the seat and can I upgrade at airport?
Or. Gain a few more miles so I could book the PE flight?
What would be cheaper?
Thanks

You can only upgrade M+M fares to another M+M fare in a higher cabin, so you could buy an economy M+M fare and then change it to a PE M+M fare, if they are available and you of course have to pay the change fee and the current PE M+M fare.

Do remember that you don't earn miles or TP's on those fares, and it is always worth checking what the current cash only price is, as if there is a sale on, it can be only a little but more, on sometimes even cheaper to buy with cash than use M+M.

If you've paid for premium then upgraded to UK using miles + money do you get miles and TP on the premium bit that you paid full whack for?

So if I paid the cash price for economy can I pay for the upgrade using M + M ? If so what would it likely to be?

I don't think you can upgrade a normal cash economy fare to a PE miles and money fare, although I'm not 100% certain on that.

Bakes28, I'm not really sure what you are asking. You don't earn an miles or TP's on a MPM fare, if you upgrade a cash fare with miles, then you earn miles and TP's for the fare code you paid cash for.

I booked my PE flight 4 months ago. I called yesterday and asked how much to upgrade to UC. They said I could use miles and money to do this so I did. Will I get miles and TP's at all? I paid a full price premium ticket so feel I should get miles and TP on that. So wanted to know if I will

Yes you will get the miles and TPs from your PE fare but not the UC upgrade.

What you have done though is NOT the same as a Miles + Money fare even though you have used both miles and money to upgrade from PE to UC.

So you've purchased a S or W PE fare? If so, and you've used the requisite miles which are 20,000 per person return (plus the cash to pay for the difference in taxes ) to upgrade to a G class UC reward fare) you will earn miles and tier points for the revenue fare (S or W).

So you will get your PE miles and TPs - but what you did is NOT the same as buying a M+M fare which is what Bigdave asked about.

Very interesting, I for one had no idea you could use M+M in this way to go from K to Z. Out of curiosity, did the 15k miles you used get you a significant discount on the cash only upgrade price?

Also, was the original K fare booked as M+M or as cash - becasue if the latter you'd expect that it would still earn miles and TPs under this arrangement.

This could be very tempting for me in future.

Hmm, interesting indeed, I too would be interested to know what the saving over just a cash upgrade would have been.

Paid cash only for K seat. I had no idea you could do it either :-). We have over 250000 miles between us so using 15k each wasn't an issue. Ticket was just under 1k each (less for child) to upgrade to the Z. Apparently Miami is expensive route. We paid £1250 to upgrade K to Z for Chicago in May and were told Miami ones probably wouldn't come down in price and had previously been quoted £1400 pp to upgrade
