Hawaii help please.

I know I've asked before but I'm still struggling . Help!!
After 20 years of married bliss ): Mr DL has booked flights into HNL (via LA and Vegas ) for 9 days in October to celebrate this significant achievement (his words..... ).
For some reason he is determined to spend the entire 9 days camped out in Waikiki Beach ?| ?| and is set on one of the Outrigger properties as a friend has stayed there reecently(Outrigger on the Beach??).
I think I'll be going nuts with 9 days in Honolulu and have suggested buggering off to some of the other islands to no avail. I even suggested hiring a camper van (OMG :0 :0 :0 ) which as anyone who knows me will confirm is a sign that I have taken complete leave of my senses :0 .
So, a couple of questions.
Can I happily spend 9 days on Oahu (in WB)?
If not where can we go?

Oh I forgot to say he's booked economy seats from LAS -HNL as it "wasn't far". He lied!!!! It's nearly a 6 hour flight!!!! ! !

I honestly didn't realise Hawaii was so far from the USA mainland :0 . Australia is nearly as far away as the USA !!
Economy :0 .
Methinks this trip is going to cost him (dearly ).

I've always thought that Maui is the place to go in Hawaii - it looks beautiful and peaceful whereas Wakiki looks very noisy and crowded.

And 6 hours in economy is easy peasy!

I would suggest trips to the other islands which are only a short hop away. It should be easy to do a day trip or an overnight stay at one of them. What about Maui or Hawaii itself, commonly known as the Big Island. Tell him that part of the volcanoes area is used for astronauts training for moon landings. Also to go to the Volcanoes Park where you can see lava pouring from the ground. It can be really exciting or a bit "is that it" but I was glad I went.

Just to re-iterate Tinkerbelle's statement that 6 hours is easy-peasy. I did it in economy and it was OK (but better coming back in First)

DL, what is the "travel policy" in your marriage contract? This reminds me why I book all of the travel in this household....

A chap does his best and all he gets are compaints! Don't you see he has booked economy so he can be so very close to you. That he wants 9 nights on WKB so you can meet on a higher more deeply fulfilling plane?

Wakiki is lovely and certainly "not noisy and crowded" although the outrigger hotels certainly are very loud and, for us, to be avoided as we like rest and peace.

We always stay at the Hilton Hawaiian Villlage which is at the furest edge of the beach and is pure bliss, for us and there are plenty of things to do and see on the island without jetting off to another Island. As for 6 hrs from LAX , try closer to 8 and it is a very tiring haul from the UK (more so than from Australia in our experience)

Kauai is really nice and just a 35 minute flight from Oahu. The Princeville area where they filmed "South Pacific" has stunning scenery and Sunday brunch at the Princeville Hotel is fantastic! This is also the island where they filmed "Jurassic Park" We took a helicopter ride to see the island, exhilarating and terrifying at the same time as it had no doors!

We stayed At the Hilton Hawaiian Village Oahu before flying on to Kauai. There was plenty to do there, its close to shops and restaurants. It has an interesting museum on site and you can also do the Pearl Harbour Tour.

We went to Waikiki a few years ago and stayed at the Hilton Hawaiian Village.
Supposed to stay 7 nights but I was planning our escape after the first night and stayed for 3 nights in the end.
Nothing wrong with the hotel but Wakiki was a crap hole.

We learned a lesson and I will go back to Hawaii but it will be to one of the other islands.

Most of the locals who we chatted to wondered why if we had bothered to travel that far we were just going to Wakiki and not the other islands and I think I could see their point. None of them thought there was any point travelling just to Wakiki - you may as well stay on a west coast beach resort on the mainland. They had good things to say about the other islands though

I was in Waikiki last month and thoroughly enjoyed my 6 nights, there are plenty of day trips you can make such as Pearl Harbour and a trip along the coast leads to where Lost and Jurassic park were filmed as well as quieter beaches etc. Trips to other islands are easily booked while there if needed.

You will have an amazing fun time, (and prob learn to surf!), flight time from HNL to LAX for us was 5 hours on united, not sure about outbound as i flew in from Auckland.

We stayed in Honolulu twice for 5 and 7 day periods. On both trips we moved to other islands for a few days. Kauai is particularly beautiful whilst Maui is memorable for the drive up Haleakala - the extinct volcano - and the vivid sunsets. People migrate to the beach at sunset and just witness an unforgettable sight. Kauai is ideal for driving and there are plenty places to visit. We stayed about a 5 minute drive from the airport and didn't find this particularly intrusive.
As for Waikiki, Honolulu is a city with attendat problems. We stayed at the Sheraton on the corner of Waikiki Beach on both trips. The last time was in an oceanfront room - impressive but expensive.Pearl Harbour is a must as is the Hawaian Cultural Centre for a day trip. There are many places to visit. Whether 9 nights is too much is a question your husband will have to find an answer to!
Flying time from LAX was 5 1/2 hours on a DC-10. Not checked the timetables recently.

We did a similar trip for our silver anniversary, we travelled transatlantic UC but travelled Y on Hawaiian airlines which was absolutely fine.

We stayed 5 nights at the Sheraton Moana Surfrider on WB and had another 5 in Maui. Have to say I loved the experience of both islands but thought Maui much prettier and scenic.

Ok, firstly HA has a pretty decent Y product, certainly better than the vast majority of US airlines, the 5-6 flight should be ok.

If your spending 9 days in HNL, rent a car, if not you will go nuts, there in plenty to do on Oahu, but you need to be able to drive. If you've ever driven in Ireland than it's a very similar set up, the roads are to small for modern traffic so it takes ages to get anywhere. A round trip to say Turtle Bay will take the best part of a day, however, if I had to spend a day in a car,I can't think of many other places that I would rather spend it.

If it's the Outrigger Reef, that's where I stay, nice hotel, there are plenty of food options with in walking distance and you are on the beach.

Kauai was beautiful and one of my all time favourite holidays. So unspoilt and very friendly. There is the Hawaiian version of the Grand Canyon, the rainforest hills, spectacular beaches and great snorkelling.
I stayed on the beach in a hut on stilts with a little BBQ area underneath.....perhaps not what you are looking for :w

I also travelled Y after flying out to LA on ANZ business. To be honest it was fine and after looking at First I couldn't see much difference. Also on one of the legs a family of enormous Hawaiians were overspilling all the seats in First so I was actually grateful to be in Y :0

Only reason for going to Awahu (and Wakiki I suppose) is to see Pearl Harbour, then catch a plane to another island.

Having recently visited Hawaii, I can say that Owahu is overcrowded, busy and expensive.

For what it's worth, we stayed at the Kahala, nice hotel, but food is outrageously expensive, and I won't be doing that again.

Maui, however, is worlds apart - beautiful, peaceful, a sort of village atmosphere - a stunning place (I can recommend the Hyatt regency, really nice hotel with one of the best Luaus I've ever done.

Lanai and the other islands are also explained to me as very different in their own ways, but equally different (positively) to Awahu.

If he can't be pursuaded, just have options ready for when you both get sick of Wakiki - and you will!

Maui, for example, is a 35 minute flight away, and you can actually get to all islands very easily - I highly recommend Hawaiian airlines.
