Hi Tez and welcome to V-Flyer

It will be perfectly possible to upgrade your K PE fare to S and a call to Flying Club will provide you with the cost - which might come as a bit of a shock :0

You can also do this at the airport (I have several times)ie if there is UC availability you pay for two upgrades: from K to S and then from S to G. From memory this has worked out at about £1000 in total for LHR/LAX.

Addendum: Just checked: Actually I paid £688 to LAX and £449 return from Boston for K to S upgrade, then used miles to upgrade to G. On reflection the £1000 referred to above was for a straight S to G upgrade.

I have been stung by the K to S cost before at the airport in order to use miles for a UC upgrade. For HKG to LHR one way was I think it was around £350, then the 20K for the upgrade.

Whilst on the flight I realised there might have been a better way! Swapping the PE K fare for an economy Y fare might have earnt a refund, then spend 30K miles for the upgrade? If you have the miles that might be worth a try?

Anyone see any downsides to that?

As a K is unchangeable you could not have swapped it for a an economy Y fare to then upgrade. Plus you would have had to fay the additonal fuel surcharge too,

BTW you were not 'stung' by having to pay to change your K to an S to be able to use miles. It is the difference between the twe fares. If you had bought an S in the first place it would have been more than the K. 20k miles is the standard to upgrade from PE to UC, Thems the rules !

I guess 'stung' is relative. I agree that was the fare difference for K to S. For me though, I'm usually paying to make an economy fare upgradeable at the desk, which seems to be around the £200 mark, so £350 felt painful given the ticket had been more expensive to start with (as it was for PE).

But I take your point that the fee was totally legitimate.

Thanks too for clarifying that my downgrade idea would have failed.

Quick question tagging on to this topic, my outer flight to LAX is Upper and return is PE. However I wont have enough miles to upgrade until after the outward flight, so could I change from a K TO S and then upgrade with miles even though I have already completed part of the journey?

How could I find that out?

By either calling FC, or looking on the VS website.

You can search for G reward fares by doing a dummy miles booking.

You can search for S fares by using using this page on the VS site.

It varies, so the best thing to do is call FC to get an exact price.

S fare requires either a 7 day or 21 day advance purchase. If you are less than those then you will end up paying a W fare.
I would think that if you want to pay up at the airport there will be no advance purchase therefore you will pay full W fare.

Unless they have any 'on the day deals' which then make fare codes irrelevant.
