Maui or Big Island? I'm thinking Maui? I still have nothing booked save for my flights into HNL via LAS and back to LAX. Mr DL is about to lynch me :P . I leave for LA 6 weeks tomorrow. This is to celebrate my 20 years of wedded bliss. At this rate we won't achieve 21... :0

The Big Island has two distinct sides - the dry side and the wet side. The dry side is where Kona is based and is dry (natch) and brown. Aer John's description when we got there was "It's just like at Granny's". He was referring to the West of ireland where peat bogs are the norm and I knew exactly what he meant. The wet side is where the main town Hilo (pronounced Heelo) is more lush and green.

While we were there we went to the Volcanoes park where you can see lava coming out of the ground. Sometimes it just oozes gently, other times it is more spectacular. If you go there take plenty of water. It is HOT!!!

There are also black sand beaches which are unusual as well as a monument to Captain Cook

Oh dear, I really must go back to Hawaii

I personally loved Maui - it's almost a village(y) atmosphere, and there is plenty to do - but it all depends what you're looking for really.

Big Island is far more sparcely populated, and has the attractions HL mentioned - they are a bit different.

Spend a few minutes revieewing the info on each island here
http://www.gohawaii.com/
I found it quite helpful.

If you plump for Maui, take a look at the Hyatt Regency, good location and lovely resort.

Hope this heps a little!

Good choice, DL

Although I enjoyed my time on the Big Island I sometimes felt that if I had gone to Maui, it would have been more in line with my idea of what Hawaii was like. Mind you, it didn't help that Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa were wreathed in mist when I was there.

I chose the Big Island on the recommendation of American friends who visited there regularly and like I said, didn't regret it but the next time Maui beckons.

Oh, I'm so hoping it is :) . It has been a real effort to get Mr DL to agree to some time away from Waikiki (which I have to say looks a bit like Benidorm :0 ) but I succeeeded in the end :D . He was intent on spending the whole 9 days there v( .
Anyway, I'm really looking forward to this bit of our trip (if not the seat I'll have in Y from LAS- HNL ): LOL).

Yep - glad you made the choice DL - you'll love Maui I'm sure.

Assuming you're flying HNL/OGG, keep your camera handy, you often get a fantastic view of a lve volcano 10/15 mins before landing - it really is quite a view!

Waikiki like Benidorm? Yes and no - the atmosphere isn't far off, except it's 3 times as expensive!!!

Really, you're making a good call trying to get away from there ASAP - I have the number of a great taxi driver lady in Maui if you'd like it; she was really knowledgeable and helpful, and was always on time for our bookings whilst we were there - let me know and I'll PM you. It's worth pre-booking taxis as you'll get a better price than just picking one up at the airport.......you might be hiring a car though, so just let me know.

I also have one for Owahu who I rated highly...

Have a great trip, I'm confident that you'll llove Mai and wonder why you've never been before...

We are indeed flying from HNL to OGG directly on from our LAS- HNL leg (but on different PNRs).
Do you think HA will be kind enough to through check our bags from HNL on to OGG ?
I'm looking forward to Waikiki in a peverse sort of way (and I have nothing against Benidorm either :o) ) but realise that it will be nothing like the "real Hawaii" that I hope we find in Maui. Thanks for the offer of the taxi driver, but I am planning to hire a car. Feel free to PM any further info :) .
Many thanks again to all for the advice and help :) .

DL - I found HA to be nothing else but helful, so there's a fair chance they'll check your bags through, but there might of course be technical reasons why they can't - just ask, I guess, can't do any harm.

I hope you enjoy HA as well, as my previous TRs (and others) show, they are a great airline.
