ipad novice

Hi,

Just taken the plunge and bought an Ipad 2 while in the US - can I ask a couple of questions please (I feel such a luddite!)

It came with a power plug, obviously for US. I have a US-UK adaptor for use at home, but would it be better (or even possible) to buy a UK plug at home, rather than use the adaptor?

I've done a synch with my netbook for itunes, as advised. I can access my gmail account, but it only shows my inbox - I can't seem to get to my contacts or calendars. What do I need to do to access them?

Finally - when I try to access some sites (such as this one) - it doesn't connect. It's fine on other pages - the only way I've been able to get on this site now is via netbook, so clearly it isn't the router. Again, something I'm doing wrong????

Any help much appreciated. I feel such a dummy!

Hello and welcome. I can comment on your first question re the plug, you could use a US to UK adapter and you should be able to buy a UK plug for it, if not an apple one then an 3rd party one. A quick search on Amazon and loads come up.

I am sure one of my esteemed fellow V-flyers will be able to answer your other two questions.

To view your mailbox, click on 'Gmail' at the top left I will take you back to view all accounts, then click on 'gmail' under accounts and you will view all sub folders. (sorry if I'm not clear, not great at explaining!)

I wouldn't waste your money buying a UK power cord from apple - a simple US-UK converter will work perfectly. Most Apple products have a big voltage range, so will work pretty much anywhere without a voltage converter/specific country power cord. I have never had any issues in the 18 months I have used mine that way.

No idea with the last part, posting this reply from my iPad without any issue.

I've always downloaded security software for use on pcs/netbook/laptop - AVG usually. Does it also work on ipad?

Still having no luck with my contacts on email - and I can't log out of it either. Shouldn't I be able to log out? I get the feeling something there's something vital and obvious I'm missing. I did also google it, and mobileme was mentioned - but it looks as though that isn't now used or available. Not sure where else to go with this...

That does show my subfolders, but not calendar or contacts!

Try this:

Setting>Mail, Contacts, Contacts>Select your Account>Turn on Contants and Calendar. Sometimes only Calendars and Notes will sync. Otherwise you can sign up for Google Apps and migrate your email or manually sync your Contacts. There is a setting/app to sync your GMail contacts to your PC/Mac.

Looks like EVERYONE can use Google's Exchange ActiveSync.

Might want to try to add your account again as an Exchange ActiveSync.

You can also use Google ActiveSync for Sky Email as well on an iPhone and/or iPad. Sky use Google as their email provider. You just replace the Google user name/password with your Sky one.

Great tip mitchja. Many universities have moved their email to Google Apps. Cheap as the admin/staff needed drops like crazy!

Have also downloaded google docs, so that's fine. I can't see though how to copy and paste from a word document. Or maybe I can't do it...

How about security? A quick google search suggests AVG isn't supported on an ipad, but I don't feel comfortable having no anti-virus software, even though I think these gadgets are less vulnerable to hacking? Is there an alternative free download that works?
