That's a phenomenal deal, especially if you have an AMEX PE voucher as you could get PE to just about anywhere for 25k + tax!

Wonder if they're trying to reduce their air miles liability so they can tie in to an alliance?

These reward sales, they're no different from normal reward seats (ie: not the limited upgrade code that say an amex PE reward is)?

I just feel concerned they list out the economy sale, then only a subset of those are listed for PE, and none for UC. Surely if you can book an economy at say 25K, its 45K for PE and 85K for UC...

You can use this economy reward sale in conjunction with the AmEx PE upgrade voucher no problem.

What you can't do, is buy a Y reward for 25k and then just use 60k miles to upgrade to UC (thus only using 85k miles), you still have to pay the full UC amount which is either 90/100k depending on route.

There isn't currently a sale on UC reward seats, probably because they don't need to have one.

Thanks,
Neil

I have an economy return from MCO to LGW booked at 15,000 miles +$182. I can see that my flight now has PE reward availability at 25,000 miles + $182. If I was to phone up, could I upgrade to Pe for just an extra 10,000 miles? Or would there be more surcharges?

Thanks

Yes, you would be able to upgrade for just another 10k miles, if the taxes for the PE fare are the same as you have paid for your Y fare then there should be no need for any additional charges (unless they charge a change fee, which I am not sure of TBH).

I think there's a variable fuel surcharge by class enforced by VS. I think change fees are waived if you're upgrading only. ISTBC though.

There will be the additional APD for being in a premium seat on the LGW-MCO leg so £ 60 (approx $95).

Not sure about fuel surcharge though as it's not listed in the 'fare breakdown' box when I did a dummy booking and the difference between a Y and PE fare was simply the additional APD

Not bothered about the outward. Got a G :-) for that one. However I only had 76,000 miles total so opted for a economy return at 15,000 in the then sale. Thanks for the replies. Seems its just an extra 10,000 miles then as the surcharges for y are listed exactly the same for PE. I was just making sure there was not an admin charge of £50 per person or some such thing to change reward seats.

I think there is a £25 change fee on reward bookings, which is waived if you are an FC Au member.

You WILL have to pay the addtional APD on your LGW- MCO leg.

PE is in the higher rate band of APD as it is classed as a premium cabin.

Awesome - have bagged 3 LGW/MCO flights for Jul-2012 in PE and used my 2 AMEX vouchers that were due to expire in 12 days +100k miles!

What a result, and thanks for posting the info.

I'm definitely a happy camper today:D 3 PE MCO returns for £950 cash:D

Thanks for the reply. I already have an upperclass reward for the LGW-MCO route for which I paid 50,000miles and £280 so the max APD was in that and already paid.

I did not have enough miles to get a PE return at that time as they wanted 37,500 and I only had 26,000 left. So I booked an economy return flight at the discounted price of 15,000 miles + $183 surcharges.

So now with the PE sale, a return is only 25,000 miles, which with the 15,000 I've already paid and the 10,000 in my account, I could manage. According to VA site, both Y and PE have surcharges exactly the same, $183 for the MCO to LGW leg. So I was wondering if I could phone up and simply pay the extra 10,000 miles, or would there be a change fee.

An earlier post indicates that there might be a £25 reward change fee.

Sorry but you are confusing us with your routing and not being consistant. You are also mixing currencies whihc also dosen't help !

You orginally said you had a return from MCO-LGW (i.e meaning you were travelling MCO to LGW and then LGW to MCO) and were wanting to upgrade to PE on the return i.e. the LGW-MCO leg hence why I said you would have to pay the additonal APD.

You also said you had a G on the outward - again giving the impression that you were travelling from MCO to LGW and back and not the other way round.

It turns out that your routing is actually LGW-MCO then MCO-LGW which is quite an important difference !

Incidently out of the £ 280 you paid to upgrade from Y to UC only £ 60 related to the additional APD having paid £ 60 within your original Y fare.

oh ok. I can see where the confusion arises. Obvious to me of course, but on re-reading its far from clear what I'm whittering about! apologies, never done a reward flight before.

I did both routes online as 2 x reward one ways (not upgrades). this was because I had 50,000 and my wife 26,000. (she is taking the kids with her on ba with our airmiles before they get devalued)

When I did the one way from LGW to MCO the tax etc was in pounds, but when I did the one way MCO to LGW the taxes were in dollars. I'll just give them a phone call.

Ok Got my answer for the flying club. No surcharge if upgrading £25 if moving flights and taxes etc exactly the same, so it was 10,000 miles to upgrade from Y to PE. All booked. Bargain!

Just to bring this one back up. It appears that the reward seats that were available for 19k are no longer around.

The only destinations left are below.
JFK/NEWARK 29,500
ANTIGUA 39,500
NAIROBI 39,500

I never quite got the reward sale seat of 39,500. Isn't the usual reward seat price for economy to that destination 40,000? Sure its a sale, but saving 500 points?
