This was a reward booking to burn my BMI miles, booked many months ago, cue some worrying when the BA bid for BMI was recently announced :? I'd only flown with VS once 15 years previously.

When booked this was originally scheduled as an A330, but a couple of months ago it was changed to a 747 with the three of us plonked firmly in the middle of the downstairs cabin with the seat map locked out. I was therefore fortunate to be able to log on at 7am the day before and grab 73a/74a/74c :) I was then able to get seq 2, 4 & 5 when online checkin opened a few hours later.

We stayed at Gatwick the night before and used twilight checkin, which seemed a much more civilised way to do things, meaning that we could saunter straight up to security the next morning. We used the normal security upstairs as we hadn't thought to check where fast track was located, but there was no delay going through in the new area.

It was a very foggy morning at Gatwick, and while there weren't many delays, the 27 was showing as 90 minutes late when we arrived airside. We spent about 3/4 of an hour in Cafe Rouge, and were very impressed with how impeccably the 2 minute silence was observed.

The flight was eventually called, and we made our way to the gate, and fairly soon afterwards onboard. As we went up the stairs my mother finally discovered that we were travelling in PE :D

The sparkling stuff was provided straight after we sat down, and soon enough the captain was describing our route, which would be more northerly and then westerly than normal, due to a hurricane in the atlantic.

The food was pretty good, and the service upstairs attentive. I'm very impressed with the space upstairs, and the amount of storage available. The IFE was Nova, but fortunately it behaved itself all of the way across the atlantic.

All in all an uneventful flight until we landed in Orlando, still 90 minutes late, at which point we were warned that the VS15 was only 8 minutes behind us and that we should get to immigration as fast as we could to avoid the queue. When we were allowed downstairs we found that economy were also disembarking at the same time from both aisles, causing a fair bit of congestion. Fortunately it only took 20 minutes to clear immigration by which time the PE bags had already arrived on the belt.

Through customs and we were then ordered to put our bags on the belt while we took the transit. I considered arguing but decided that 4 suitcases between 3 of us on the escalator could be problematic. This did mean that we had to wait about 15-20 minutes for the bags to appear again on the belt underneath the main terminal building.

All in all a very good experience, it's just a shame I dont have enough miles left to book another one anytime soon.
