I've given up connecting from VS flights on the same day (unless it's an early AM arrival like SYD connecting with an airline that has lots of flights to my eventual destination) ) because of the problems described. Even on the same PNR it can be a lottery if the connecting airline has limited schedules.
I too struggle with the concept of the airline taking your money, changing the flight times significantly and then being unhelpful to resolve resulting problems when they a see a two hour time slot as being insignificant :(! .

I generally don't book on the same PNR so for a long time now I have given up on connecting to flights without a good safety margin not only for the reason stated above but also in case of delays on the first flights. If I am connecting to a flight leaving LHR before midday I fly over the night before. In other cases when travelling to LHR I often take the flight earlier to the one I need to take just to make sure that I can get there in time and that I have a safety net. On flights from LHR, generally I take the same principle, but occasionally it has not been possible and I have held my breath or, on one occasion I booked on the same PNR when the margin was just over two hours and there was no other later alternative.

I really wish I had booked for the following day now. I just thought a 4hr connection time would be fine and even allow for a 2 hour delay, plus i didnt want to spend the last day of our honeymoon sat in MIA espcially with a 10 hour flight to get home. The earlier flight from Cancun would have got us into MIA at 2.00pm and of course the VS flight was scheduled to depart until 8.45pm, 7 hours of waiting around for a 10 hour flight im sure doesn't sound fun to anyone.

Im hoping AA will be more helpful than VA or ill just have to book new flights into Miami which is cheaper than changing my VA one.

Oh sweetheart, I so feel for you. Generally speaking a 4 hour connection would be fine but.......

it isn't! Even if the flight to the UK hadn't changed its time, it is still in the lap of the gods with regard to US airlines changing schedules willy-nilly. I have suffered from them changing and even cancelling flights or changing flight numbers.
