If I book a L class flight from LHR to HKG (say), round trip, and upgrade it to J with 60,000 miles ..... do I still earn miles for the trip at the Economy (L) class fare paid?

Yes you do, keep us posted on your success with the upgrade!

Note however you may need to request VS to post them ...

Old thread, I know. But I finally got around to agreeing approx. dates with my little friend in Hong Kong and started checking availability. For several weeks, I looked daily with no suitable "pair" of available dates. Outbound OK, no inbound; no outbound but an inbound. Until one day last week. At last! And Lo! I now have
- a round trip in G class booked for January on VS 200/201
- 60k miles less in my account
- and a credit card bill of GBP1069.45 (plus a credit card fee) for the lowest upgradeable Economy fare, plus extra taxes.

Sorted.

And the call centre operator did advise me that my miles and TPs would not automatically accrue; that I would need to call after the event to acquire them.

Congrats on the G, I along with many others are also looking for 2xG's for next year.

Just a bit of info for you I went onto live chat and they did it there and then for our flights last week on M tickets to UC, and they did the tier points as well, result no phone call. ^)

Just bear in mind that if you upgrade with miles from a paid fare you will need to call VS to get the miles and TP added as - for some reason - their system is not able to cope with you using miles and giving you miles for a different cabin.
