I'm going through another of my 'never flying economy again' phases, which typically come after an overnight long haul with the family... Anyway, having got a fair few miles amassed now, would appreciate if anyone can answer these questions:

1) Assuming all the necessary availability, is it a legitimate option to book 2 Gs for me and my wife and 2 paid for Zs for the kids (i.e. will VS allow a booking where only the children are on revenue tickets)?

2) If yes, can the Gs and Zs all be booked onto the same PNR?

Obviously I realise this would all have to be done via the FC helpline, but given the somewhat inconsistent advice that comes from that direction, I thought I'd check here first for anyone else's experiences... way I look at it, if I could make this work, the actual £ cost of this option wouldn't be hugely different to 4 paid for Y tickets...

thanks

1. Yes you can. I'm sure that mdvipond will be along to confirm this later but I rather think he did this on one of his trips in the past

2. Even if they are on different PNRs they can be linked to the same booking and you can do OLCI for all of them at the same time

Thanks HL. Of course, there is the considerable challenge of availability to overcome here, especially on a plane with only 14 UC seats and in the school hols (Dubai may be a better bet than the Caribbean for this experiment), but good to know that it is at least possible.

As for OLCI, don't get me started on how rubbish that system is. On my last flight, despite going into 'my bookings' and having all 4 of us listed on the same PNR, when you try and check in, you have to first say that you want to check others in, then specify the number adults and children, and then list each of their names and the PNR again - 3 times... suffice to say, I never expect to get a coveted Seq 1...

One follow up question that just occurred to me - if I were travelling on a G, I presume that wouldn't stop me earning the miles from the kids Z's (which I normally get from our family account)?

I'd double check the earning rates for a child in a Z, you maybe worth doing a comparison and swap the kids onto G.
Also worth noting for clarity to anyone getting excited...that your family account is ONLY available for Gold members.

NH - thus far, my cherubs have earned at the same rate as adults, although obviously without the benefit of my AU or my wife's AG bonus level. And no TPs either. But I think that weighed against the 25% base reduction of the child fare makes doing it this way round the most efficient use of miles/cash...

And yes, sorry if I got anyone excited with my talk of 'family accounts' - I know that's been a bone of contention in past threads... :|
