Hi,

I'm going to be hiring a motorbike and riding from San Francisco to Las Vegas and would much prefer to use my own crash helmet.

Does anyone know if I would be allowed to take it on as hand luggage or if I would have to check it in? I would prefer not to check it into the hold but if I must...!

Cheers

Tom

My Daughter often races in the USA and we've alway taken her helmet as hand luggage on VS with no issue.

You'll be fine. I have travelled twice with helmets as hand luggage, without advance notice to VS.

Do they get annoyed if you put it on during the flight though?

We wanted to take ours as hand luggage a few years ago so I rang and inquired and was told no problem as far as the airline was concerned but on the day its up to who ever is on security that decides and not the airlines - really helpful. What do you do with it then if your refused! We bought a hard sided suitcase instead rather than take the chance and now we always put ours in there surrounded by our snowmobiling clothing for protection - so far so good.
Good Luck, I'd be interested to know if you get thru ok with it as hand luggage please.

Not sure about VS, but I have always been refused taking a ski helmet as hand luggage. Best to check.

Thanks for your help everyone, I have just called VS who tell me that I AM allowed to take it as it fits in the overhead bins and weighs less than 6kg.

I took her name and extension number so I at the very least have someone to shout at when I'm told I have to leave it at the airport!

Cheers
