What are you talking about switching carrier? just don't switch on your phone!

You lot are like a bunch of old grannies complaining about nothing. The services on a flight are not designed around you personally. I welcome this, it will give me a CHOICE to use my mobile or NOT.
And anyway, sitting next to someone speaking into their phone is no different than sitting next to two people talking to one another.
If someone is being loud on their phone then ask them to be quieter if it bothers you that much but I think most people will be considerate.

Given this is your first post here you might wish to review the tone .This is v-flyer , not FT :) .
DL

I disagree, some of the posts I am commenting about are clearly by the ill-informed who clearly like their soap box moments. Therefore the tone is correct.

I bet none of you have even been on an aircraft with any kind of WiFi/GSM service. At least, if any of you did then you would have mentioned it in your posts and NONE of you have.
Like in science, test the situation first, wait until you have sat next to someone on a phone and then describe the results. Don't state what is going to happen when you have never experienced it. Otherwise its not commenting... it moaning...

Can't wait to see your post after you've been woken up in the middle of the night on a plane (where it's hard enough to sleep in the first place)...

...by someone's custom ringtone, followed by the verbal self-importance which undoubtedly follows.

Welcome to the site, "traveller4171", by the way. Handy hint for a first post - while EVERYONE is entitled to their opinion (including you), calling many of those who have been valuable contributors to v-flyer over the years "old grannies" is probably not going to score you many points.

I fly on a weekly basis throughout EMEA and the most common reason for being woken up is children screaming. Why don't we ban these? They disturb everyone else.

The term 'old grannies' I reserve for anyone who complains about something without ever experiencing it first. If you have sat next to someone on the phone and they have been loud then you have a valid point, but not until...

And, by the way, this is a forum not the military. I don't have to earn stripes or seniority before speaking my mind. This is, last time I checked, still a free country.

Yes but when most people join a forum, club or other organisation they don't start out by insulting the other members the moment they walk through the door.

The term 'old grannies' is insulting no matter how you try and package it.

And using such a term is hardly going to gain you many customers for your company is it? Remember what happned to 'Ratners' ?

We might not have sat next to someone using a mobile phone on a plane, but we have sat next to them on buses and trains and know just how annoying and intrusive they can be

Yes, you are right it is a forum but be do expect a modicum of good behaviour and politeness from our posters. Comparing people to a bunch of old grannies isn't the most auspicious of starts, is it?

Yep, "old grannies" is pretty insulting.

I haven't experienced people using a mobile phone on a plane, but as with others I am regularly annoyed by people using mobile phones on trains. This issue is recognised by the train companies some of whom provide quiet coaches.

It was available on our flight to JFK on the 25th April (Think it was Miss NewYork - only 5 days old - very proud crew)and I thought at the time, this has got to be the worst thing ever but as you say it is so limited and not available over U.S. airspace anyway so can't see it catching on except for the odd D...Head wanting to try and impress someone. WiFi would have been a much better option.

Wrong. VX, very often (WiFi). EK, yup - I fly with them too on their A380's through Dubai.

Now, "I bet" sweeping statements make a fool of those who make them....

Please find provisioned in your amenity kit a large spade, a spare foot, and a mouth.

First you insult, then you add insult. Way to go.

So.... Everyone is up in arms with the "I dont like the idea of this, I like the peace and quiet that sitting next to 2 Trent 772's affords me..."

Hang on - its been available for over a year, and yet all of these complaints are still supposition.

Doesn't that kinda illustrate that it's not actually that much of a problem?

Great, then their opinions are well informed. lets hear from them only.
Sweeping statements?? like everyone who will use a mobile phone on an aircraft will be loud and disturb those around them? You mean sweeping statements like that?

BAD move. v( n(

I wonder if the likes of Virgin America, Emirates etc. have the same problem with people using the wi-fi to Skype, iMessage, FaceTime etc. etc?

As has been pointed out before, this service has been available for a while already. It has caused no issues.

While we have the person from Aeromobile in our presence, maybe they can clear something up... are roaming agreements in place with all UK networks? I'm sure I remember looking some time ago and an agreement was only listed with O2.

People using their phones on trains drive me mad and especially those who cannot read the signs "Quiet zone".

Wifi yes, text messages yes, voice calls a BIG NO!
