Connecting flights - how does this work?

Confused as to how this works with VS - or if it works. The site shows options to book with destinations VS doesn't fly to, so I thought that meant you could book connecting flights on the site. However, I just tried a dummy-type booking, and the destination defaults to New York. Does that mean then that you can't, in fact, book connecting flights, or is it a call to VS instead? I was hoping to have seen prices at least this way, but it isn't playing ball!

Apologies - I think I've just answered my own question by finding the flight connector - now let's see if it works!

Warning - the flight connector tool on the VS website won't book your tickets on a single ticket or PNR number, so it's no better than booking two completely separate tickets independently.

To get bookings on the same PNR, and therefore benefit from the protection that entails in the event of delay and also baggage tagging, you need to phone VS.

We have a flight booked through virgin (booked on the phone). We are flying fro EDI with BMI and connecting with VS at LHR to LAX.

According to the girl on the phone, we will have to connect collect our bags off the BMI flight and check in again at LHR. We are booked on the one ticket so I would have thought it was possible to have the bags checked through at EDI. Anybody got any experience of this?

My experience of dealing with VS agents on the phone, when it comes to connecting flights, is that they don't get it.

If you have a ticket on a single PNR, showing EDI-LHR-LAX then your bags 99.9% of the time will be checked through to LAX by the BMI agent at EDI. If this happens you won't need to re-check in anything.

They can't always give you a VS boarding pass, so you might need to get this from the transfer desk in LHR which shouldn't take long. The VS transfer desk may also wish to can your baggage barcodes just to make sure they're loaded on to the flight.

In the past I've been told things like "you won't need to collect your bags on arrival in a US airport if you are going on to another flight" and "if you book a reward seat with VS we can't put a connection on the same ticket and you'll have to check in separately because they won't tag your bag through".
