Car insurance with amex plat

Sorry, Me again, still 'costing' the benefits.

Looking to hire a car in the US next year and maybe take advantage of the insurance on the card. The usual carhire sites I am going to have the insurance included.

I tried a direct booking with Alamo and that came out at $1900 :0 for a 'full size' for two weeks two days (albeit dropping off at another location, bit still....)


Does anyone know of any car hire sites that offer reasonable rates but do not have the insurance automatically included?

A lot of the time booking through a 3rd party agent like uscarhire or usrentacar will be cheaper for UK residents (even with the inclusive insurance) than booking direct with the rental companies themselves (this hasn't been true for the bookings on my upcoming trip though).
One way rentals can be an expensive additional cost - I had a costly one a few years ago when I hired a car in Memphis and dropped it off in Tennessee. You get used to the fee free drop off options in Florida/ California/Nevada so it can be a bit of a shock (it was almost as much as the rental itself :0 ).

Hertz Gold have always been kind to me, with the Plat Card discount, next week in mco (ok usually cheaper than some areas) we've a full size 4x4 for a couple of days under 2 weeks for $240, plus they usually upgrade at pick-up to something the size of Anglesey... :0 :w ):
depends on where in the US, new york area is always steep, but that sounds ott..
a lot swear by USArentacar, but I've always seemed to get better deals through Hertz,?

Plat card will get you Circa 20% off hertz/ Avis etc, plus Gold coverage
The insurance and priority cards (x2) makes the annual fee a no brainer in the NH household..

Phew I was worried for a minute there.

I always use Hertz now where possible, the Gold Canopy offering is very good and the service level and cars provided as a PC member are usually excellent y)

Just watch out for the £50k limit on the value of the car. You can use it in your home country, as long as it is combined with a flight or an overnight stay that is booked with AmEx.

I've never manged to get car hire cheaper with no insurance in the US. I've tried hard many times to make use of this Amex Plat benefit but found it useless. As already mentioned package deals for UK residents that include insurance, fuel and extra drivers are usually competitively priced

With all the recent changes to the AMEX insurance I sought clarification from AMEX on certain issues. They have confirmed that

1 for the travel insurance (delay,cancellation etc) you need to book the trip/flight etc and pay with the AMEX (any card linked to the account, primary or supplementary.
2 for the hire car insurance you DO NOT need to pay using the AMEX.

If you are worried that the rental company will not accept or believe you have cover they will supply you with a certificate of insurance to show the rental company, they emailed it to me straight away. y)
