Exit row seat assignment

A colleague of mine is on a flight where she had a Y seat pre-requested. She has subsequently booked an exit-row seat. I know that the assignment will be done at the airport but at the moment the booking still shows the old seat (and it appears to be possible to change it).

Is this how it normally works? -- i.e. you can still fiddle around with your seating but it will be ultimately pointless as you will be reassigned at the airport? I had assumed that the ability to do anything relating to seating would be removed from the sector once you'd booked such a seat.

yes I think so.

It maybe down to the fact that if they judge at the check-in desk that she is not suitable to sit at an exit row then she hasn't lost her original seat.

This is normal, I've done it quite a few times. When your friend does OLCI she will see a new seat number on the BP. The final assessment of whether she is exit row compliant is done once she is in the seat. When you buy an exit row, either online or via the call centre, they (or you) read the rules which you have to agree to.

As an aside, I was on VS 27 to MCO a few weeks ago, sat in an exit row seat and there was a fresh faced young lady sat next to me. She had won a VH competition to Orlando and her mum was a few rows back. During boarding, the stewardess, who had been chatting to us for a while was suddenly concerned that the girl was under 16, so she asked very politely, "Are you over 16, you have to be to sit in an exit row?" The girl replied, "Actually I'm 19 and at university"

As soon as I booked my exit row seats, the ability to view or change seats was removed from MMB. Maybe it's because I didn't pre-select a seat prior to paying for the exit row seat

I'm sure she'll be delighted if the crew think she is younger than her age - I doubt they'll be asking if she's over 16 though..
