Last August I took out a VA Amex Black card and paid the annual fee in order to qualify for bonus miles. I reached the amount of miles I needed last week and was able to book three reward flight to Tokyo next year. I then rang Amex and cancelled my card before I became liable for this year's fee.

By cancelling my card I hope I have not ruled myself out of the two PE upgrade vouchers that I would be due to receive in the next few weeks. Does anyone know if I will still get them and if so can I apply them retrospectively to my existing booking and upgrade two of the tickets to Tokyo providing there are reward seats available in PE.

Also I still have 30 odd thousand miles left. If I wanted to upgrade the third ticket using miles alone would I need the difference between the regular mileage and premium ie the diffence between 50,000 and 70,000 or will it be the difference between what I used for the tickets, ie 25000 and 70000.

Any help would be appreciated

Welcome.

Interesting first question, and I assume that you will still receive the PE upgrade vouchers providing you met the required spend. I've had a quick check of the T&C's and can't see anything that suggests you won't receive them still.

Regarding your second question, you have to pay the difference between the reduced amount you paid and the current PE amount required, not just the much lower amount.

The T&Cs don't seem to address your first question. However, I would be very suprised if you received the vouchers if you are no longer a cardholder. I can't see why MBNA would notify VS if you no longer had an active account.

I too would be surprised if the upgrade vouchers land in your account post card cancellation. Have you checked to see if they are there already (they'll show in your FC statement on the VS website)? Personally I would never cancel a card prior to any bonuses/ awards being credited .

The rewards only hit your account after the full 12 months since the card account was opened.
