the news service and general weather forecasting round here is pretty good, they have to be with the ways storms develop. florence isnt expected to become anything. ernesto is still heading west and could be a cat 1 by tomorrow

Looks like it might hit land a bit south og you on Wednesday.
It will likely be very wet and windy for a day or so.
Unless things change, I suspect your flight will be OK.

a few years ago now i was the victim of a hurricane in florida, and sadly didnt get to hear about it until we pitched up at LGW and were politely told the flight was cancelled (incidentally the flight was scheduled the day before the hurricane was due) but VS didnt want to take a chance, in the event the aircraft got stuck I assume. So flight cancelled, sent home and told to call travel agent (who were closed on a weekend). The upside was when the storm had passed VS put on two daily extra flights to recover the backlog and i actually managed to get booked onto the first one of those directly with virgin.

my advice, check before you set out for LGW.

Thanks all.

Ian I'll warm a sun bed up for you.

All checked in, when we entered the v-room the guy said the flight was on time so fingers crossed all should be well.

Scrooge wrote:Well the good news is, it was a tropical storm when it the Yucatan.

It actually came ashore on the Mexico/Belize border as a Category 1 hurricane with sustained 85 mph winds. The pressure rose (and therefore wind speed reduces) fairly quickly when it lost the warm water fuel it needed and the eyewall collapsed.
Even a tropical storm can cause huge damage and loss of life. And remember, the wind speed is actually the least of the problems. The storm surge on the coast, the flooding and the low pressure are the much bigger problems. It is the low pressure that causes the roofs to lift from buildings - not the wind.

Ok, local news said tropical storm. But checking on yahoo, they also said it was a cat 1 at landfall, I stand corrected.
