Having re-read the article it's now obvious..

http://www.virgin.com/travel/news/virgi ... ertainment

V:Port is soon to be re-branded and brought up to date with a new look and user interface, for those aircraft not equipped with JAM.. According to the article it'll be on 25 aircraft by the end of the year.. Does this sort of thing not take long to implement or is it just a software update?

Agreed, what's the head count on how many of the VS fleet will be fitted with JAM by the end of the year :? :? Refitted Gatwick fleet and the A333s..

Nothing about a refurb of V:Port - sorry StillRedHot, can't see it..

I did initially think the same, but then the mention of a re-vamp rather than 'installing new systems', and the mention of a London design agency (why would they have anything to do with the installation of JAM?!), plus other snippets I've heard from elsewhere and from VS, led me to the revamped V:Port system.

10 A333's plus 8 LGW = 18..

Thank you.. oo) oo)

Uh oh!!!!! "..additional features secondary" Goodbye skymap and games :P

I wonder how this will be rolled out... I could swear a lot of the IFE outages I have come across of late have been faulty wiring and hardware failings. Fingers crossed they are doing a complete refit of it. 8D

Cheers, pretty close to 25 isn't it... lol. ):

So, a redesign of the UI not anything to do with the hardware. VPort is perfectly good, some of the screens do need to be replaced though ...

Should be seven LGW 747s not eight.

If the a/c does not currently have VPort then this will have no effect so we still have to pray to the G-VSUN god when on a 343 route.

It does sound more like a user-interface upgrade rather than any hardware changes but hopefully they will build some checks and fixes into the build.

^^ Ahhh down to 17 total then guys... still I wasn't far off. To make up the number all VS have to do is release that brilliant innovation of theirs on the LHR fleet by the end of the year.. the "new" handheld form of entertainment device, with all the movie data kept on removable circular storage modules for added convenience :P Can't wait.

Rustigearbox2 wrote:So all the 747s will have AVOD IFE?

After the refits are done, the 747s will Louis. Only leaves any A340s left laying around :P

Flying PE to HKG and back from NRT next April. Think the norm is a346 on this route, but they're replacing them with a343s in the new year?!

Slightly concerned with all these changes that I'm going to be left without JAM or V:Port...should I be? ?|

On the plus side with IFE Virgin have an order in for 787 dreamliners and with Quantas cancelling their order it has sped up the process as I believe Quantas has between 10-20 aircraft order which I can't see why Virgin wouldn't install JAM on these new aircraft so eventually JAM will become the norm. May not be an immediate fix but hey all good things come to those who wait.

I find this thread baffling! There have been many complaints recently about the way in which v-port is suddenly ageing, and yet when plans emerge to give it a refresh, we are greeted by a prolonged stocktake of VS aircraft! ?|

I welcome this news, and I hope that the content improves along with the superficial features.

There seems to be an awful lot happening at the moment -- barely a week goes by without some new development trickling out. It seems to me that VS is trying pretty hard to improve. y)

I recall another thread on here saying that wifi was coming to the VS fleet in particular the airbus aircraft. could this be linked to a re-fresh of V:port?

Darren Wheeler wrote:Problem is, how long before JAM becomes dated?

IFE must be like the latest computer or smart phone. No sooner has a model hit the shelf, it's out of date.

Not only that, but as higher specification tablets roll out there must be the thought - why bother with the point of delivery hardware at all ? Why not just have a content server to which personal devices could attach?

Though I must add, y) to a refresh of V:Port.
