[RANT] Just received this months mobile bill (Vodafone) and was astounded by how much it cost me to call Virgin Upper Class on the following number: 08445 791111. I had a return first class ticket on Malaysia Airlines booked through the Upper Class Team using my miles, I then found it had dissappeared from my booking area within my account so called up the UC Team. After being on hold for a total of about 2 hours across 10 different calls (one call I was put on hold for 25 minutes and then asked to call back later total call time was 35 mins, of which I spoke to an agent for 4 minutes cost of £10). Anyway, it turned out that there was an aircraft change on the return segment and I had been moved to business and they needed to resync the booking. Of course, then when I enquired about the return of some of my airmiles and taxes as I had been downgraded and therefore it cost less etc they said yes we will sort that... and to date, a month later nothing. I am not prepared to call up and be left waiting as I have in the past, no one has ever called me back despite promises. I have been cut off more than I can care to count on a hand. I am a polite person and have worked in customer services in the past so can understand a bit, but this really is awful. Theres no point me continuing calling to try and sort it out as my time is costly to myself along with the cost of the call, it outweighs what I am entitled to back from Virgin and its just a shame. Its left a very bitter taste in my mouth and the return UC ticket to JoBurg I was planning in the new year will be going to another airline. [/RANT]

08 numbers always cost silly money from mobiles, unless you have a mobile tariff that includes them (which I do on T-Mobile :) )

Use saytnoto0870.com to find geographic equivalent numbers (which there are a couple for VS available). There are also several freephone dialler numbers and apps available which work on most UK mobile networks for dialling freephone numbers on a mobile at no extra charge as well.

Thanks James - I knew there would be a cost but never thought it would be that expensive. I wouldnt have minded so much but 90% of the time I was on hold. Never making that mistake again... would have cost me less to drive to Cardiff and sort it out face to face. ;)

Next time use the "call back' option?

It might have cost less to drive to Cardiff but it still wouldn't have been sorted (given they're in Swansea :) ).

After far too many expensive 'holds' in the past, I have concluded that the rule of thumb should be 'Don't call Virgin' at all, never mind from a mobile.

Still an 0800 number - won't have to pay for all of that on hold music that can be listened to :P

I do feel sorry for those that get put on hold with the 0870 and 0844 numbers, must rake in a fortune n(

0844 numbers are national rate so still the same as a normal number

0870 whilst not being premium (as in 09 numbers) are a little more expensive

BUT that is from a landline. From a mobile they are more expensive.

As mentioned http://www.saynoto0870.com is a good resource. An alternative is looking for a 'calling from abroad' number on a company website which is usually a geographic number though you may have to dial 141 before the number to hide your number from the system.
