BBC now reporting cancellation of VS flights on Tuesday -- although I think they mean 'from' JFK and EWR, not 'to'!

Hello from New York, by the way, where meetings are cancelled, my hotel was evacuated yesterday :0 , and it has started to rain. :?

Have encountered several holidaymakers who are clearly very distressed by it all.

VS75 left MAN for MCO just about on schedule. Flight plan is much more southerly than normal - just clearing the southern tip of Eire now. (Oct 29 12:14)

Feeling very much in limbo down here in Florida. We've booked American flights up to JFK on Wednesday morning, but who knows if it will be cancelled or not. Our VS flights are Wednesday night - VS010 - which is still showing as on schedule.

Trying to look at all potential options for rescheduling (later flight out of NYC, flying out of MCO or MIA), but we're on 3 x Gs and 2 x Zs which rather complicates things. We're following the news coverage to get an idea of how long the storm will last but - whilst it's all rather dramatic (thanks Fox!) - it's not particularly helpful...

The VS75 often goes over the southern tip of Ireland - I should know, I live there. |:)

What has been unusual today is the number of flights which take a much more northerly route flying over my home such as G-VWOW flying the VS19 to SFO. Usually the most southern route that flight takes is making land fall in Ireland just north of Wexford and heading towards Galway.

Ouch.... had that last year when Irene came to visit. Person I was travelling with and myself just sat in the hotel stocked up on pizza, booze and snacks and watched it hit the city :P In the evening, RAN across the street where the Irish bar was having a Hurricane party for those who were stuck in the city :w

Hotel evacuated not good n( n( - where do you usually stay? We tend to favour the ones in midtown. Does this mean you are currently in a school or community centre?

Though it would add even more flavour to your TRs, I hope hope it all gets sorted with the minimum of fuss.

Possibly including my wife's Deputy Head to whom we've always said "you simply must go to NYC and October half term's a great time what with Hallowe'en and everything". Not sure she'll be speaking to us when she gets back.. B)

Alas, my optimism was short lived, as the VS12 has now been cancelled and will be flying tomorrow as the VS112 instead (meaning there will be two London bound flights from Boston tomorrow).

Oh well, to find a hotel I guess!

So I just realised why Tinkerbelle is in Boston, meaning there can be two flights out tomorrow - it's because the New England Patriots chartered the plane to take them to Wembley for the NFL game this Sunday, and they arrived back today.

Which is surely good luck on Virgin's part, because they've managed to get an extra aircraft on the east coast 'for free' as it were.

I think Boston escaped the brunt of the storm although the coast looks battered judging by the 101 news reporters leaning into the wind and getting soaked by the waves crashing in all day. We were lucky not to have any power outage in my street and the wind/rain had stopped by 10pm. I'll see what the damage is like in the streets in the morning. Not a lot of national TV news coverage (as is the norm in the States) but New York looks hit hard - with Battery Park (lower Manhatten) under water.

The latest news from the FAA is that JFK (which suffered flooding of the runways) will reopen tomorrow at 7 am EST, EWR will not reopen until at least 7 pm EST tomorrow so that puts flights to Newark in jeopardy until Thursday. LGA also was flooded and is closed until tomorrow. I'm guessing there's still a lot of assessment of water damage to be done though.

I remains to be seen how much flooding of the tunnels and subways in Manhattan occurred and what effect that will have ...

Mr Summer booked on VS18 tomorrow .....joining me for my birthday! Worried about house on Long Island....Mr S was busy boarding it up on Fri/Sat/Sun....then drove back into Lower Manhatten Sunday afternoon....no doubt will know more about the damage over the course of today....as long as all are safe, that's the main thing

It certainly does look as bad as forecast, our HQ is located by a tidal river in NJ and it is 'out', there will be disruption over a wide area for quite some time.

Wow, that storm has left one hell of a trail behind it. As long as people are safe is the main thing. Let's just hope the cleanup doesn't take too long and the casulty figures stay low.

Pumping out the flooded tunnels and subways is going to take a while I would imagine, not to mention the ground zero site. I fear it may be a fair few weeks before all is back to normality. I suppose all the preparation they did for Irene last year served as a practice run so to speak and this no doubt limited the damage and loss of life. Fingers crossed the worst is over. 8D

Yes, bad as things have been over the past couple of days, the acid test from a business standpoint is actually yet to come - in my case when the financial markets reopen but people are stranded due to buildings that are still flooded and a transport system that needs more time to recover.

In the meantime, I am just glad that all my friends and colleagues over there seem to be ok...

Just watched the Mayor's briefing.

Airports are closed today -- runway flooding. It is not known to what extent navigational equipment has been damaged.

He said perhaps 3-4 days for the subway to come back. The electricity people are saying days, perhaps up to a week to restore power to some bits of Manhattan.

Here you see the nature of the problem. Most airfields have underground wiring, some tunnels and as per the Jet Blue blog they're saying debris on the airfield too. LGA, JFK and EWR were flooded, EWR probably the worst. JFK is reported to be reopening partially tomorrow - I fear for the Vipond family.

Oh dear.

BA has now cancelled most of its flights to and from NYC on Wednesday too...

... including the one on which I had booked a one-way ticket in order to get home and out of this mess. :(

Starting to get very difficult indeed to find anything back to the UK this week that doesn't involve a full-flex J fare. :0

And to cap it all, was supposed to be moving to a different hotel tomorrow... downtown :0

Not the best of trips.

A lot of talk over here that LGA is unlikely to open until Monday, with someone commenting that is the "current optimistic forecast"!

Feel for you, hopefully things start to pan out for you! Main thing is that you're safe and able to type.
