Welcome to V-Flyer.

Flights to MIA leave from LHR not LGW.

What do you mean by the best time of year? Quietest? Cheapest? Best Weather?

Only you can decide if it is worth upgrading to UC - for me, it would very much depend on how much the upgrade is.

My one and only word of advice about MIA -AVOID v( v( . Horrid place, cess pit of the earth. I'm not alone in my dislike for the place either.

agree with DL. as a florida resident there are many nicer places UNLESS you are going purely to party and for the nightlife. Miami beach yes sure there is some great sightseeing, but Naples, sarasota both have nicer beaches.

weather wise in order of preference my favourite months are October,April,November, march. come early october the humidity goes along with the thunderstorms and the temps are in the mid 80s (unless on the periphery of a hurricane !!) April pretty much the same. Novemeber and MArch are a bit cooler. the 'winter' here is gorgeous but Dec and Jan can be a bit 'chilly'.

It's not all glamour like Crockett and Tubbs or Horatio Caine!

I flew to MIA last March and can honestly say that it wasn't all that bad. The queue for immigration was moderately long but not half as bad as I have experienced at JFK! The airport itself is a bit tired and grubby, I agree.

I think if you haven't been to Florida before, which I hadn't, it is worth staying a couple of days in Miami just to see what it is like before perhaps travelling elsewhere within Florida. I really enjoyed visiting South Beach, although again, it wasn't as spectacular as I imagined! Shopping is good in that area and there is a huge choice of restaurants/cafes. We are going to spend a couple of nights at the Loews next April before travelling to Fort Myers/Naples area for a couple of weeks' relaxation.

We had no choice one year going to Florida as the Orlando flights were all booked as it was very late in the summer booking season, so we went in and out of Florida via MIA. After being to Orlando area many many times I must say Miami was a shock to the system, many houses with bars on windows, one minute it looks fine next road looks like a war zone, just didnt feel safe at all. We only stayed for a stop over at the start and end of the holiday, but I would never go back that route again to be honest.

I love Miami itself (it's a great place to kick back and have fun), it's just MIA ( the airport ) that is a hellhole :(! .
Others have experienced no difficulties but I've had 3hours + at immifration more than once and also pulled for secondary screening there which wasn't pleasant at all ( and I've still no idea why :(! as it had never happened before and hasn't since).

Ditto the dear Lady Dragon - it's also a great place to base for exploration north, south to the Keys, and into the Everglades as well as over to the Gulf coast. MIA airport = hell.

If you are dropping a rental car back at MIA, please, please, please keep an eye out for the car rental drop off signs as if you miss them, it is at best a 20 minute detour to get back again !!

I would also avoid MIA at all costs, hate the airport.
Far better to fly into NY or even Chicago and then get a flight into the fabulous Fort Myers airport. The Everglades and Naples etc are so much easier if flying into RSW. :D

Flew to MIA in July. The one thing I promised my self was that I would never be in Miami again.
Miami airport is the worst airport I have ever been in by a long way. There is nothing positive I can say about it.
In my view - MIA (and Miami)should be avoided at all costs.

MIA is a truly awful airport v( - Only use if you have exhausted all other possible options.
