Hi there

Just after some advice from those of you that have booked flights from the US West Coast to Hawaiian Islands.
I have been checking the flight prices for our trip next Aug/Sept and currently on Expedia I can see flights for £307 each. Stopping in HNL on the way to OGG, and direct from OGG to SFO on the return. They are with United.

Is this a good price ? I want to get them booked but I think the flights are non changeable so want to have some confidence that I am not paying over the odds.
Can anyone advise ?
Is there a better site I could use to book the flights.

Thanks
L2H

I can't answer your question directly but I often use the sky scanner website to compare flight prices, especially as you can set it up to see how the price varies during the course of a month/year. Not sure if that would be any help to you?

Are you flying directly into SFO and then connecting to Hawaii? Or are you doing a stopover in San Francisco?

If you are stopping over, you might check the alternate airports for flights to OGG. Alaska Airlines flies from San Jose (SJC) and Oakland (OAK) to OGG and they often have cheaper fares since they are not out of San Francisco. Both airports are within a 30 minute drive from San Francisco.

I flew from SJC to Kona last month for $308 roundtrip. The fare to Maui was about the same price at that time.

So to me it seems that 307 GBP is a bit on the high side.

FWIW I think those prices are about right. We paid more than that last year with Hawaiian.
Hawaiian is worth a look too as I found them to be excellent, but in the UK you'll need to book their flights via Orbitz ( you can't book on their website as a UK resident).
I did a couple of TRs on HA which might be of help :) .

You may want to consider Alaska Airlines also. Have flown with them a fair number of times, and whilst you won't get VS mileage with them, you will get BA. They appear to have extensive coverage of Hawaii...

That's about the right price...However, I would look at Hawaiian, they are coming in a bit cheaper that UA, it's certainly a better flight than with UA, you can earn miles, but no matter what you will also have luggage fee's as well don't forget.

Thanks again all.
Will look at those, have not heard great things about UA.
We have flown with Hawaiian before and they were OK.

Alaskan airlines - are they the ones with Bob Marley on the paintwork ? :D

Rumours continue to abound that VX will start service to HNL, but it very much remains to be seen given their impending capacity cuts in Jan. But, VX have quietly been doing ETOPS runs to HNL and back.

Also WN is supposed to be starting HNL service, I love WN, Mrs Scrooge not so much.

UA have actually improved a lot over the last couple of years, in some ways, however, you will be on a 752 with no PTV, however, the economy plus seats are well worth the extra few dollars. The meal service is buy on board, the Thai chicken wrap is very good, certainly better than most free meals on other airlines.

well, have been scouring the internet, looking at reviews, charges etc and I think I have settled with flights with HA.

LAX-HNL-OGG and then OGG-OAK. They come in just inder £1k for the 3 of us, grateful for a good exchange rate at the moment.

Next question is how long is a safe transfer time at HNL for our flight to OGG. Various options varying from just over an hour to longer.. any advice on that ?

Thanks, I am nearly there and could not have done it without all your advice :)

If the SFO- HNL- OGG flight is all on one PNR it won't be a problem as HA will ensure you get to OGG even if the original connection is missed ( flights are frequent between HNL and OGG). This may also be cheaper than booking 2 separate itineraries. If the flights are on separate PNRs HA can still check your bags through to OGG and give you the HNL -OGG boarding cards at LAX ( just ask them at check in :) ) . Personally I think an hour is long enough to connect ( I think we allowed for 90 minutes hours which was plenty of time).

Thanks DL, went for the flights with 1.5 hours in between just in case we need to grab a bite to eat etc
I booked on the HA website through to OGG so 1 PNR hope our bags will not need to be collected, a bonus when you are travelling with a young child :)
They also let me choose seats , went for LHS on all flights as heard this gives the best views flying into HNL and OGG.
So glad it's all booked up, we are staying in an ocean view condo at Honua Kai. The pools and view look amazing! Now just need to wait 9 months :-/
