Just a small word - MIA isn't quitethe "hell hole" that everyone is stating here. We use MIA every June now, and the arrivals "scrum" took us about 40 minutes the last 2 times (from PE) so it could be better, but not (in my experience) as bad as some are saying....

And the departure side was smooth - from dropping off car to being inside the departure lounge was less than 30 minutes...

We may have to travel to FL a few times in the next few months and we a considering Miami and a longer drive just to avoid MCO in the future........

Is is always this bad ?

Whereabouts in Florida are you going to be frequenting in the next few months, if you don't mind me asking?

As others have mentioned there's various options. If it's the Orlando area etc then SFB is one alternative though you're tied to the charter airlines' schedules.

LOL ... MIA does get a rough ride. Although I think deservedly, my experiences have left me with no desire to go to MIA unless I absolutely have to, FLL presents a perfect alternative within the US ...

travelled home on the vs28 11/12 and no issues, smooth transition through security and prompt pe boarding. although only 171 on board so a great and easy fight, never had a problem at mco

Was on VS15 last night into MCO. We arrived 30 mins late just after a Lufthansa flight. That really was carnage!

First we weren't allowed to disembark the aircraft for 15 mins because security was too busy. Then it was a 90 minute wait! Nuts!

I was on VS15 on 8th Dec and they also wouldn't let us off the plane for 15 minutes after stopping because the hall was full. Then just another 2 hours before we finally got out of the immigration hall. Living hell - puts me off using MCO again.

I think it is often down to timings. I love MIA and on I have never had longer than a 30 min queue. I think all airports have their peaks and quiet periods. It also helps if your off he plane first.

Place we are visiting is Melbourne, however Melbourne International is only an option via Atlanta or Chartlotte :-(

To be fair on the way out, we were delayed and landed after the Lufthansa flight so that probably didn;t help but on the way back it was just chaos !
