Hello, it is my first post - I just have a quick question about companion flights.

I am almost eligible for a free companion flight with Virgin thanks to the Virgin MBNA credit card. I would like to use that to fly out with my partner to Cape Town. The way I understand it, if I purchase 1 PE class return ticket (fare code W) I will get a second ticket for free and only have to pay taxes.

My question is: can I then use miles to ugraade those tickets to upper class? I have asked someone at Virgin over the phone but whey didn't know...

Any help much appreciated - many thanks

Welcome to v- flyer. In answer to your question you can upgrade the revenue ticket to UC with miles but not the companion ticket. The lowest class fare applicable is a S not a W. Sometimes it's cheaper to buy ( with cash) 2 x K class fares and don't forget there needs to be reward class availability for the companion ticket.

Before you bite the bullet on a purchase, you MUST check the following:

As DL says check 2 PE fares at the cheapest available rate (and consider hanging out for sales). It is rare that this is more expensive, which makes the Companion "ticket" a bit of a marketing ploy for those who aren't travelling on a company bought ticket.

When you do this, add your total S fare + a second helping of the Tax & Surcharge amount. (you'll find this under the fare breakdown bit)- all doable via a dumbing booking.

Secondly, I believe that there needs to be a useable fare free in that class (i.e. same as a reward seat)- so you can't just pick any flight- you need to find availability first.

I've had the MBNA card for years and always qualify for the companion seat- but in well over 5 years I'm yet to find a sensible use for it. Prepare to be frustrated and annoyed...
