Hi,

So I have a holiday to Los Angeles booked through Expedia in June and the flights are Economy (N outbound - Q inbound) with Virgin. None of the bucket/upgrade information makes much sense to me unfortunately!

If I wanted to I could upgrade these tickets to PE by paying the extra I could yes? Upgrade restrictions in the various codes apply to mileage upgrades correct?

Once the seat map opens I can see how many PE seats have sold and decide if it's better to upgrade earlier or wait until I check in online the day before the flight (Are the check in upgrades cheaper?)

If anyone has any useful information to share I would appreciate it! :D

Yes, you can upgrade with cash (not miles), although you will have to do this through Expedia, rather than direct with Virgin if you want to upgrade before the day. If you want to wait until the day, then you will be able to upgrade at the airport, providing their is availability. The rough on the day cost is about £299 per person one way.

When the seat map opens you won't be able to see the PE seat map, you can only see the map for the class you are currently booked in to.

Thanks Neil, that's good info.

Any idea what upgrade could/should cost beforehand or is that like asking how long's a piece of string?! I'll try give Expedia a ring tonight and see what they can do it for currently.

When you say I won't be able to see the seat map for PE is there any way to find our what seats are free? If I have to ring Expedia and agree to an upgrade then go to Virgin Website and choose seats I could end up with seats I don't want (near toilets) as they could be the only ones free! If I know other seats are available I'd feel happier booking!

It is impossible to predict the price for an upgrade now, it will depend on many factors, but basically it will be the difference between what price you paid for your ticket and what price the current lowest PE fare is.

Expert Flyer does allow you to view a seat map in advance (VF members can get a discount on membership), but it is important to remember that only 60% of seats are available for pre-selection and they are only requests not a guaranteed reservation so they can be changed at any time right up until the flight.

Well Expedia have quoted £671 each (£100 Change fee Included) to upgrade for both outbound and inbound.

Anyone put that into context as to whether it sounds relatively cheap/expensive?

Only you can decide whether that's worth paying but it's worth asking yourself what else you could do with over £1300 (assuming there are two of you).

Personally, I don't think it's worth it for what you get in PE and I'd put the money towards another holiday! It could buy you both another economy round trip later in the year. But that's just my personal view.

You can always buy extra legroom or exit row seats in economy for considerably less money if you want extra space.
