Like many people , I have not found VH to be competative on any of my holidays, on an level playing field. We now try a number of specialst agencies and just choose the most cost effective, loyalty in 2013 doesnt get you far, new custom does!
After a poor experiance on our recent VS 65/66 LGW-MBJ-LGW, I am looking at alternative carriers for Jan 2014 where customer service is actually delivered and not just marketting hype

I would also agree that the No.1 at LGW is pretty good, not up to VS Clubhouse standard but miles better than V-Room. With my particular variety of Amex Gold card I even get two visits to the No.1 lounge thrown in for gratis!

Over the years I have found VH to be over priced, that said now there are travel stores I find the face to face interaction much better, they are more likely to try for a good price
(or at least my local one does )

I recently had them price up an itinerary for the far east, initially the computer chucked out a price and the agent played with it by a day or two and managed to knock £500 off.

I went home and priced it booking exactly the same flights and hotel myself with VS direct and the hotel direct. It came in £1000 cheaper!

Quick phone call to the VH store and they matched it as it was exactly the same.! With the benefit of just paying a deposit instead of the full flight cost up front.

One thing to remember with VH (or any other package) is that with it comes a certain level of protection.

During the volcanic ash cloud those on independent bookings were basically left to their own initiative and had to claim back all their hotel and food expenses where as those on package holidays were covered and VH picked up the bill.

Travel insurance will only cover you so far, and in the event of another unpronounceable volcano most have exclusions to cover that sort of event.

Darren you are correct, but people are talking about price matching with other ATOL operators
