Reward flights

Hi looking for some advice on best way to use mine and my partners miles. I have 75k and she has 47k is there any way to combine these for two reward tickets? Also she is an additional card holder on my Amex but am being told that i cant transfer points into her virgin account thanks

Where do you want to go and in what class?

You can effectively pool your miles but each sector paid for by miles can only be taken in one chunk from one person's account - but not necessarily the same account as the person flying, if you see what I mean.

lhr-dxb UC out and economy return (120k). so does that mean we both have to have 60k? just wanted to avoid having to pay the fee to transfer miles via virgin when i have miles in my amex account

Haven't had a chance to think properly about this but I suspect your easiest option would be to buy 5,000 miles and then pay for the UC sectors from your account and the Y ones from your other half's.

Just to add to my reply, no you can't just mentally pool the miles and split them 60:60 because you cannot pay for one sector with two people's miles.

If she wants the miles from Amex then she will have to apply for her own Amex card. You are benefitting her spend with miles into your account. If you are paying for the card bill then no reason why not you having the miles

The best way would be to either buy 5k for your account or transfer 5k from your wifes account in to yours.

Then you can book 2 x UC one ways from your account = 80k, and 2 x econ from your wifes account = 40k.

Have you thought about booking an economy money fare (m class) and then upgrading to UC, either one way or both? It is 30k per person each leg to upgrade Y to UC and by the time you have factored in the taxes/surcharges you will have to pay on your straight rewards anyway it might work out similar using less miles and not having to transfer/buy any.

Best to give the Flying Club team a call for the exact value.

Note that there will be some tax (APD) to pay, but the majority will be the VS Fuel Surcharge.

Unfortunately there isn't, and that is primarily because each situation is unique and the number of possible options are quite large, so it would be difficult to try and create a one rule fits all type page.

As you have probably seen, if you have a route and what you would ideally like to do in mind, then post away and I'm sure there will be some members more than willing to offer the options and their advice. However it will ultimately come down to what suits you best, and what you ultimate aim is (ie cheapest fare overall, maximum gain from miles etc).

1. dummy booking UC Fare and use the fare breakdown to identify the fuel surcharge and taxes etc element

2. dummy booking Y fare and using the fare breakdown

3. subtract 2 from 1 et voila

Yep that's what I do, sounds a faff but often quicker than trying to ring through.
