Hi

I rang the flying club to book my September flight to LAS in economy returning from JFK in Upper.

As there were no reward seats going out, I thought the best way to do this would to off booked a M or B fare code going out just in case those g's or something in premium economy came available to upgrade too) and upgrade the return leg from JFK from economy to upper for 40k miles.

Anyway, the very friendly fc assistant on the phone suggested that I took a combifare, which was the economy flight going out, returning from JFK in upper, still earning miles and tier points. This was for 20k miles and approx £750

I think I got a good deal. I had 60k miles to play with, and I've still got 40k! Just wondering if anyone would of done something different to increase value?

If I've understood it correctly, that sounds like a really great deal. Has it been ticketed?

If it's the same as I got a month ago (but in reverse), £750 + 20k miles is about right.

I got an M economy fare LHR to LAX which I upgraded to a G for 25k miles, and an O restricted economy fare back from JFK, total was about £800.

I earned full economy miles and TPs on the outbound and half on the return.

You should never have had to spend 40k miles to upgrade from economy to Upper on the JFK to LHR leg - that's the return price.

Check what fare buckets they've sold you - if the LGW to LAS leg is an O, you won't be able to upgrade it.

Thanks for the replys. Yes, all ticketed and showing in my future flights! The chances of any upgrades coming available on the outbound are very slim anyway so the o fare code (if it is) wont really make any difference.

Now thinking of what to do for 4 days between vegas and nyc. I want to experience 'middle america'!

Seconded....if you've got 4 days you could explore more of the desert southwest...Canyonlands for instance is a magical place.

Thirded - the Canyon is a must see!

You could combine that with a drive on old Route 66 if that takes your fancy - that really does take you through "middle America".

From Vegas you head past the Hoover Dam and join 66 at Kingsman Arizona. Then maybe spend the night in Williams, hit the Canyon early on day 2 then overnight in Flagstaff. Then aim for somewhere like Albuquerque on day 3 where you could pick up a flight to NYC.
