The first desk was empty so a relatively quick check-in and off to "fast track security". Everytime I use this, it is always a slow track option - today was no different!
Lounge
When we got to the First Lounge they advised us to try to Club as it was very busy. As this was my first visit as Gold, not impressed! It was very busy indeed, but we did manage to get a seat (Club galleries was much quieter when I wandered in later). It was lunchtime, so there was a selection of nice salads and finger sandwiches. Hot option was a soup or bacon roll - not as good as LHR! Champagne had also run out. Oh dear, not a good first experience. Time flew by and soon we were off for boarding.
Boarding
Fast track in operation so we could walk straight on as they hadn't called the general boarding yet. It was an old BMI A319! Much better than the usual LGW offerings - they have the arm rests that more inwards in Club and the fold down table in between the seats. Very nice and space felt much more than usual.
In flight
Service was attentive and plenty of drinks offered (and taken). As this was an afternoon departure, it was the dreaded afternoon tea - ok but we were due to arrive at 18:45. Sandwiches very nice (similar to ones in lounge) and scones. Limited duty free due to lack of space on the A319.
Arrival
Arrived about 20 minutes late and took a while for the airbridge to arrive. The immigration hall was very busy and every now and then they opened an extra desk, which resulted in people running to start a new queue. Eventually through and bags were already there. Got a cab to our hotel - despite this being a registered cab, the driver refused to use the meter and quoted a fare of 30dinar. Can't help thinking we were ripped off a bit!
Overall impression
- LGW First lounge - disappointing!
- Flight - very good, made better by the fact it was an old BMI plane with better space!
I certainly would expect the Lounge manager to be reprimanded for running out of champagne with a V-Flyer in its presence
