Upgrade your flight cost - pointless option?

I check my future itinerary from time to time (travelling LHR -> SFO next week), and they have part of the page suggest you upgrade. Earlier in the week it was 2,800GBP per person , today it says :

"Upgrade the whole trip to Upper Class for GBP 8,923.00 extra per person"

For the two of us this gives a Fare total of GBP 15,662.00 to upgrade.

Do they seriously expect to tempt anyone? ?|

It's automated and is adding cost from a presumably deeply discounted ticket to full J fare, which to SFO is just short of £10k return, each.

I find it really strange how these fares are worked out - I have just been on the phone to Virgin, asking about using a flexible fare to upgrade on the VS1 from LHR to EWR and he told me that it would be £10,000 for a flexible economy ticket !!! and then I would have "the option" to use my miles for a one way upgrade to Upper ?!! I guess they are just reading off a screen but it seems pretty crazy!

£10,000 for an Economy fare to New York sounds very reasonable to me.

That certainly strains credulity and in fact I am 99.99997% certain that something is wrong with that agent's computer..... If you would have settled with a figure around 4K I may have believed that, what with the whacky way the fares are marked up on occasion

Perhaps the booking agent was tinkering around before the system maintenance that has just taken the booking engine down n( Would love some warning before this stuff happens!! Even if it is past midnight GMT, need to check out some reward availability for next week ii)

Joys of Computer technology..... On a connecting flight to China Via Hong Kong, the option of having my bag checked all the way through with Virgin was more than £3000.00 more than me picking it up and checking in again for onward flight..... Those luggage handlers in HKG must be on 1 hell of a wage !!!!!

I too check my itinerary weekly and managed to upgrade LHR-SFO in Aug PE-UC for £830 when it came up during a sale in March this year so I guess you just have to do it at the right time.
