IFE SELECTION FOR APRIL - HAS VS GONE MAD???

I watched Flight on recent flight from Barbados, gave me a bit of a laugh watching a film about a plane crash while I was on board.

I watched Flight on a recent trip. My choice and didn't bother me but I did get gasps of shock from work colleagues when I told them

I don't see a problem either, I've even watched airplane on VS!

I also think the Family Guy episode '"Airport '07" has been shown and that has a plane crash in that too.

There was an article in the Evening Standard this week and apparently John Travolta was the first choice for the role in 'Flight' but he turned it down because some of the script was unrealistic - plane flying upside down for example. Someone must have forgotten he is a qualified pilot and owns a 707 as well !

I don't see a problem with films like 'Flight' being shown and nor should there be any formal rules about disaster films being shown or not. No one is forced to watch it (unlike the days of drop down TC screens) and there are write ups in the magazine giving brief summaries to enable people to choose wisely.

I watched Flight on my last VS sector. A warning is clearly displayed on the IFE screen when you choose the film -- you couldn't stumble into it by mistake. Seemed reasonable to me.

This is a bit OT, but I wouldn't recommend it -- not because it has a crash scene, but because it's just a pretty poor film, in my opinion -- much too long, in desperate need of some less indulgent editing. There is a whole sub-storyline involving a love interest which is poorly developed and ultimately just wastes time, to say nothing of the silly scenes with the pilot's friend who supplies him with various substances.

I thought better of it. For me it wasn't anything to do with flying as such, but really about the nature of behaviour and the possibility of redemption. I think it had to be a longer film to tease out the story that it wasn't a simple 'oh my I have seen the error of my ways' arc. I suspect the John Goodman scenes were as they were to try to keep you thinking of the main character as someone with flaws rather than a complete sleazeball.
