Hi all,

First time posting here!

I'm due to fly LAX - LHR return in late August (21 or 22) and return back to LA Sept 1 or 2 and will be booking my flight tomorrow.

Not surprisingly, no award seats to upgrade to are available each way.

Wondering if I should book an upgradable fare in the event award seats in Upper open up?

Has anyone had experience with this during very busy flying periods? Should I simply call back every few days from now until week of departure to see if one opens up?

If not successful pre-departure, do the ground staff often open up any spare seats for award upgrades at the airport?

Would love to get any tips / experience for this. Hope I'm not being foolish by booking an upgradable ticket if there is no hope of actually moving up.

Thanks!

Hi - Why book an upgradable ticket now? Book the cheapest, keep checking for a reward seat, and if some do open up, either before or at the airport, then just upgradable to an upgradable fare when you purchase the reward seat. It is easy enough to do and that way you don't run the risk of paying for something you might not need.

Re availability, you might struggle on the LAX-LHR leg, rewards ex the US seem to be very limited recently, more chance on the ex LHR leg, there has been decent availability and it does change daily, so keep checking.
