Extra legroom seats

I am booked on VS93 tomorrow from LGW to CUN with extra legroom paid and confirmed back in Jan. I just did the OLCI and have been allocated seats in row 43. Not the row we expected for a LGW 747 - does this means its not a 747 or have I been moved from the extra legroom seats I paid for ?

Flightstats still showing it as a 744 and row 43 is not an extra legroom seat on any configuration. Assuming the extra legroom seats are greyed out on OLCI you might have to sort it tomorrow at check-in.

Extra legroom seats (and exit rows) are allocated at the airport. OLCI doesn't include them, so the automated system has simply allocated you normal seats on the assumption that it's a standard booking. That will be manually over-ridden at the desk.

They should be able to see you've paid for extra legroom but take your email confirmation just in case.

Indeed they did, and rather tacky adverts on them saying something like 'a lot more for just a little bit more'. Rather cheapening the brand, I always thought. Shades of Ryanair

The seats are totally different colours. Purple if I recall.

Would this be why most of the window seats on the seatmap for an upcoming 343 flight are shown as unavailable? From the sticky at the top of the forum it seems that half of the seats on either side of the plane in the rear section are designated extra legroom

I had assumed it was just a packed plane. This means that on the assumption the wing blocks the view in the centre section there are only 7 rows of seats selectable with a view out of the window on the A340-300

Is it possible the rows of 2 in the smaller economy section over the wing are blocked off for OLCI?

Yes you can move to an available extra legroom seat after take off, but you will still be charged the supplement by the crew onboard

I don't care about an extra legroom seat but I would like to look out of the window without sitting at the very back of the plane. Seems I can't unless I buy an extra legroom seat, most odd.

Yes thats true but there are only about 13 rows of economy seats on the 343 which have a view out of the window, hence my point

Why 'ouch' ? VS is perfectly entitled to protect these seats from interlopers who haven't paid the small premium to sit in them. There are often complaints on the VS face book page about people moving to these seats and whom the crew did not charge the fee or move them back.

They are also selling these seats as extra leg room seats not seats with a view.

As to numbers of seats they range from 20 - 24 depending on the plane but the locations and configurations do vary and the the bulk of these seats are not windows.

On the 343 (and A330) there are 6 rows of 4 = 24 seats
on the 346 there are also 24 but in a different config
on the LHR 747s there are 4 rows of 6 = 24
On the LGW 747s there are 20

So there are not 'many less' on the 747 at all in terms of absolute numbers.

Exactly but the 343 has less seats in the first place therefore a higher proportion of the window seats on a 343 are extra legroom. The 747 has some of it's extra-legroom seats in the centre as well whereas every extra legroom seat on the 343 is in one of the two's on the outside of the cabin.

It seems you really draw the short straw if you end up on a VS 343! I've never flown on one before, its alwasy been the 346 or 747 and I've always really enjoyed travelling VS. Between my centre seat and on-a-loop IFE I'm really in a whingey mood

They are notably more comfortable than the standard Y seat, however, and the premium is pretty small. On a longer flight it is worth it in my view.

Rows 39 to 43 ABC and HJK are Extra Legroom seats on the new config LGW 747s -- so a row 43 seat would be ELR once its not in the centre (DEFG).

NO the seats are exactly the same as all the other Y seats - apart from the extra leg room and that what makes them more comfy.

And 31" is the Y standard on many airlines. Which have you flown that are 34" ?

The only VS economy seats that are different are the Exit Row and Bulkhead seats. They are narrower due to the table and screen being built into the arms.

We had extra legroom seats on an A330 LGW to MCO recently, as budget wouldn't stretch to PE both ways. Mr Aliweb agrees it was £50 well spent!
